ONCE UPON A MOONLIT NIGHT by Elizabeth Hoyt (July 5, 2016; Forever Yours Ebook; A Maiden Lane Series Novella)
From New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt comes a delightful Maiden Lane novella that begins once upon a moonlit night—and ends wickedly, wonderfully ever after . . .
Hippolyta Royle is running for her life. Pursued by hounds on a cold rainy night, the heiress flags down a passing carriage and throws herself at the mercy of the coach’s occupant. Whoever this handsome traveler may be, he is her only hope to escape a terrible fate. But should he agree to escort her to safety, he’s in for much more than he bargained for . . .
At first Matthew Mortimer doesn’t believe Hippolyta’s story, that she’s a fabulously wealthy heiress who’s been kidnapped. He assumes she’s a beggar, an actress, or worse. But once his new travel companion washes the mud from her surprisingly lovely face, and they share a breathtaking kiss, there is no turning back . . .

I enjoyed this charming novella with a perfect blend of witty, funny and sexy. This story is a spin-off of “Duke of Sin” and features Hippolyta Royle, who appeared in several Maiden Lane novels. The wealthiest heiress in England, she is an intriguing character, discreet but haughty.
On a moonlit night, Hippolyta is on the run, tracked by the fox hounds of the Duke of Montgomery. Lost, drenched and covered in mud, she is rescued by Matthew Mortimer, the new earl of Paxton. Despite her prissy attitude, he mistakes her for a down-on-her-luck actress, or, even worse, a beggar or a whore. He doesn’t believe a word she says but is unable to leave her in the lurch and offers to take her to London. What follows is a delightful travel diary, with the most unlikely animal companion.
Due to the novella format, the evolution of Hippolyta and Matthew’s relationship is rather instant and I would have enjoyed more story and character development. But the elegant writing style, the humor and the witty banter totally won me over. Matthew brings a lot of sexiness and sweetness to this story. He definitely is Hippolyta’s knight in shining armor! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic comedy and recommend it as a perfect summer read!
