My Review

Rating : 4 out of 5 Stars

This first installment in the Dirty Money series was an angsty and riveting ride of suspense, in true Lisa Renee Jones style!

Shane Brandon is a New York high-profile attorney but he left his job to return to his hometown of Denver. He intends to take the lead of his family conglomerate, clean up the dark and dirty side of its business activities and put an end to his family’s connections with cartels. His family is totally dysfunctional, with relationships based on greed and power play. There is a strong rivalry between him and his older brother, to the point that they have become enemies in a battle to gain control of the company. It breaks his heart but he knows he will have to play hardball to win and force everyone to follow him. He trusts no one in his family, not even his mother. He is a good man, with strong principles, in a difficult position.

In this highly conflictual context, he meets Emily Stevens by chance at a coffee shop and is instantly intrigued by her. She is a contradiction he wants to understand. She is sweet, but seems tormented by something or somebody and doesn’t give much information about herself. Yet, Shane is not worried by her secrets and decides to figure their relationship out as they go. He knows they both need time to build a relationship based on trust. But even if Emily wants to be honest, she has no other choice than to lie to him and she knows he’ll hate her for it.

This story had a general atmosphere of deceit, danger and secrets that I enjoyed. I found that the writing style of Ms. Jones was utterly addictive. This book ends with a cliffhanger and we are left with many questions unanswered, starting from the prologue! This book pulled me in from the first page and I’m definitely hooked!
