Lauren Smith continues her riveting series set in Georgian England “The League of Rogues”. This battle of wits between two strong personalities was a very entertaining read, and a great ride of suspense. Lady Rosalind Melbourne is a successful businesswoman and a fierce rival of Lord Ashton Lennox, a wealthy and powerful shipping magnate, member of the “League of Rogues”. She has purchased companies by underbidding him, infuriating him in the process. Not one to accept defeat, Lord Lennox intends to retaliate by taking control of Lady Melbourne’s companies and putting a stop to her lucrative activities. He has bought up most of her debts and has ordered her out of her London townhouse.

Theirs is a game of chess, with moves and countermoves in order to exploit the other’s weakness. Rosalind finds Ashton coldhearted, callous and arrogant. I loved that she doesn’t hesitate to express her opinion of him! Although he is fascinated by her fiery temper and lively personality, he doesn’t trust her. He knows she has been his equal in ruthless business tactics. But she affects him deeply and he can’t stay away from her. He makes her an offer and they become partners in crime, to deceive his matchmaking mother.

Rosalind is not immune to Ashton’s charms, despite her best efforts. He is used to getting what he wants, but can he give Rosalind what is important to her: love and freedom.

I enjoyed the heroes’ interactions, the witty dialogue and the angsty ride of suspense, with Ashton’s enemies lurking in the shadows. This sexy and twisty historical romance will hook you fast and keep you flipping the pages until the very end. The author did a great job of tying up all loose ends and giving me the happily ever after I wanted for the characters. This book is the fourth installment in the “League of Rogues” but it can be read as a standalone.
