Review : My One True Highlander (No Ordinary Hero #2 ) by Suzanne Enoch

Published April 4th 2017 by St. Martin’s Paperbacks

Rugged Highlander Graeme has one thing on his mind—take a stand against the horrible Englishman Lattimer and he will be rewarded with enough money to be set for life. But when his reckless younger brothers take it one step too far and kidnaps a young woman on her way to see Lattimer, Graeme has to intervene. He cannot send the lady back without his kin getting in trouble. And when a damsel this beautiful is dropped into your lap, it’s hard to let her go…

Marjorie should be terrified she’s been captured by highland scoundrels, but it’s hard to live in terror when your captor is a devilishly handsome and sinfully tempting as Graeme is. She cannot stay by his side forever—no matter how her heart may pound at the thought—but Graeme seems to have other plans. This wicked highlander is out to seduce her and doesn’t plan to stop until she’s in his arms…forever…

My Review

 Rating : 4 out of 5 Stars

Suzanne Enoch gives the opposite attract, enemies-to-lovers trope an intriguing spin with this historical romance set in the Highlands. Lady Marjorie Forrester’s brother has unexpectedly inherited a dukedom. As the sister of the Duke of Lattimer, her material circumstances have changed, she doesn’t need to work anymore and resides in the prestigious neighborhood of Mayfair. And yet she feels that she doesn’t fit into London Society and is snubbed by the ton. To surprise her brother, she travels to the Highlands and is kidnapped on her way to Lattimer Castle by Viscount Graeme Maxton’s younger brothers.

Graeme is faced with an impossible choice: let her go or hand her over to his clan chief, the despicable Duke of Dunncraigh, who is in dispute with her brother. The first choice would cause him a lot of trouble with the law and her brother, the last one would be financially beneficial to his clan, but would be against his principles. Graeme is a clan chieftain, responsible for the well-being and livelihood of hundreds of families.

As it happens, his unwilling guest is very determined and she has only one idea: escape as quickly as possible. There is no trust between her and Graeme, they are enemies. She finds him arrogant and aggravating. On top of that, life in the Highlands is a far cry from London standards. Their chemistry was palpable, though. To save her reputation, Graeme tries to convince her to marry him.

I loved their banter and bickering! Marjorie is stubborn and spirited. She gives Graeme a run for his money and she can’t be forced into anything. But she has come to enjoy her life in the Highlands and to respect Graeme. He is genuine and caring, he has taken on the task of raising his younger brothers and a great responsibility rests on his shoulders, as clan chieftain.

I have read and loved Suzanne Enoch’s Samantha Jellicoe series, but this book was my first historical romance by her. She has woven a lovely story of love triumphing over all obstacles, with vibrant and genuine characters. If you enjoy historical romance, I definitely recommend this book! It is the second installment in the author’s No Ordinary Hero series, but it can be read as a standalone.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley.
