They say your first kiss should be earned.

Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.

They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.

Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man.

Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.

Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.

I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.

One kiss.

Two men.

Three lives.

Entwined together.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

My Review

Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is a twisted revenge read, filled with suspense, anguish, romantic and steamy moments. To find that book that makes your heart race through most of it is so exciting! The author did a great job with the story build-up, it was original and unique, and you can’t help but keep on turning the pages to find out what will happen next. To say that reading this story was addictive, gripping and heart pounding is an understatement!

Francesca grew up in the confines of a sheltered upbringing, but she isn’t conceited or pampered. She has come to terms with the limits her family has placed on her prospects. As the daughter of a mob boss, she is not allowed to have a career and is considered as her father’s most prized possession.

Sexy as sin Wolfe Keaton is more of an anti-hero than a hero, but I fell hard for him. Francesca is stuck in the middle of his war with her father and he sees her as collateral damage. Wolfe’s retaliation plan includes the takedown of her father’s illegal activities and the ruin of her family. Wolfe is a complex character, and his internal conflict proves it. He is at war with how he feels about Francesca based on who she really is. He taunts and aggravates her, yet he admires her strength and tenacity. She lacks real power but she refuses to surrender to him. She tackles him head on.

Francesca and Wolfe are perfect together, they are striking and intriguing characters and complement each other well. Their chemistry was positively electrifying. The relationship between them was allowed to build at a slow pace which allowed me to experience the powerful shift in their feelings.

Overall, I enjoyed the book immensely and couldn’t put it down!

Many thanks to the author and Candi Kane PR for my copy of this book!

Excerpt

“Are you sure you’re on my card?” I turned to the man with a polite yet distant smile. I was still disoriented from the exchange with Angelo when the stranger pulled me against his hard body and pressed a possessive hand lower than socially acceptable on my back, a second from groping my butt.

“Answer me,” I hissed.

“My bid on your card was the highest,” he replied dryly.

“The bids are undisclosed. You don’t know how much other people have paid,” I kept my lips pursed to keep myself from yelling.

“I know it’s nowhere near the realm of what this dance is worth.”

Un-freaking-believable.

We began to waltz around the room as other couples were not only spinning and mingling but also stealing envious glances at us. Naked, raw ogles that told me that whomever the blonde he’d come to the masquerade with was, she wasn’t his wife. And that I might have been all the rage in The Outfit, but the rude man was in high demand, too.

I was stiff and cold in his arms, but he didn’t seem to notice—or mind. He knew how to waltz better than most men, but he was technical, and lacked warmth and Angelo’s playfulness.

“Nemesis.” He took me by surprise, his rapacious gaze stripping me bare. “Distributing glee and dealing misery. Seems at odds with the submissive girl who entertained Bishop and his horsey wife at the table.”

I choked on my own saliva. Did he just call the governor’s wife horsey? And me submissive? I looked away, ignoring the addictive scent of his cologne, and the way his marble body felt against mine.

“Nemesis is my spirit animal. She was the one to lure Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection and died of vanity. Pride is a terrible illness.” I flashed him a taunting smirk.

“Some of us could use catching it.” He bared his straight white teeth.

“Arrogance is a disease. Compassion is the cure. Most gods didn’t like Nemesis, but that’s because she had a backbone.”

“Do you?” He arched a dark eyebrow.

“Do I…?” I blinked, the courteous grin on my face crumpling. He was even ruder when we were alone.

“Have a backbone,” he provided. He stared at me so boldly and intimately, it felt like he breathed fire into my soul. I wanted to step out of his touch and jump into a pool full of ice.

“Of course, I do,” I responded, my spine stiffening. “What’s with the manners? Were you raised by wild coyotes?”

“Give me an example,” he said, ignoring my quip. I was beginning to draw away from him, but he jerked me back into his arms. The glitzy ballroom distorted into a backdrop, and even though I was starting to notice that the man behind the demi-mask was unusually beautiful, the ugliness of his behavior was the only thing that stood out.

I am a warrior and a lady…and a sane person who can deal with this horrid man.

“I really like Angelo Bandini.” I dropped my voice, slicing my gaze from his eyes and toward the table where Angelo’s family had been seated. My father was sitting a few seats away, staring at us coldly, surrounded by Made Men who chatted away.

“And see, in my family, we have a tradition dating back ten generations. Prior to her wedding, a Rossi bride is to open a wooden chest—carved and made by a witch who lived in my ancestors’ Italian village—and read three notes written to her by the last Rossi girl to marry. It’s kind of a good luck charm mixed with a talisman and a bit of fortunetelling. I stole the chest tonight and opened one of the notes, all so I could rush fate. It said that tonight I was going to be kissed by the love of my life, and well…” I drew my lower lip into my mouth and sucked it, peering under my eyelashes at Angelo’s empty seat. The man stared at me stoically, as though I was a foreign film he couldn’t understand. “I’m going to kiss him tonight.”

“That’s your backbone?”

“When I have an ambition, I go for it.”

A conceited frown crinkled his mask, as if to say I was a complete and utter moron. I looked him straight in the eye. My father taught me that the best way to deal with men like him was to confront, not run. Because, this man? He’d chase.

The problem?

Her family is nobility. I come from a single mom who always scraped to get by.

Electric.

What are we supposed to do? Can we really make this work? I can’t give up my career. And I can’t ask her to move to California for me. All I know is, I want her in my life.

Desperately.

My Review

Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a lighthearted opposites attract story.
It starts off very interestingly and engagingly with Susanna and Cannon’s meet-cute. Susanna is an English lady, the dutiful daughter of an earl. Cannon is a professional football player from California. Even with their apparent differences, an attraction grows between them.

Susanna is a nice, endearing girl with one arresting weakness: the inability to stand up to her controlling parents. Her parents are the epitome of nobility and so far, she has been following the rules of social etiquette. She still has to realize that the safe, expected option isn’t always the best.

Cannon was so very sexy, and I enjoyed his relentless pursuit of Susanna. He is the type of person who goes after what he wants. He became a pro football player by believing in himself and working hard. I loved that he was all tough on the outside but in reality that’s not how he really was. Yet, at first, he believes that a girl like Susanna will never be happy with a guy like him.

Generally, the story was nice but kind of predictable and lacked character development. It lost some of its romantic mojo as the story progressed, but ultimately this is a cute love story. What was best about this book, though, was how not perfect the characters relationship was. Susanna and Cannon have so many ups and downs from the moment that they meet, which makes the story interesting. Not to mention that I love opposites attract tropes, so this aspect was working for me.

My honest review is based on an advanced reader copy of this book.

Blog tour-2.jpg

Excerpt:

“I’m thinking about how beautiful you are,” I answer Susanna truthfully. She really is stunning, in that classic, elegant way some women are. She’s just very…refined? Is that the right word? Her cheekbones and jaw are sharp, her nose is straight, her blue eyes are extra bright and her full lips are the color of a classic red rose.

Her cheeks are the color of pink roses, thanks to the compliment I just gave her.

“Thank you. That’s very sweet of you to say,” she murmurs, casting her gaze downward for a brief moment before she lifts her head. “I can’t believe we’re here. Together.”

“Why do you say that?” I feel the same way, but want to hear her reasoning first before I make any confessions.

“You’re not my type,” she blurts, covering her mouth after the words escape for a brief moment before slowly dropping her hand. “Not that there’s anything wrong with you.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Gee, thanks.”

Her cheeks turn redder. “Oh goodness, I’m not trying to insult you, I just—I’m making a mess of this, and I apologize. What I meant to say is…” She takes a deep breath, exhaling loudly before she continues. “You’re not the type of man I normally date, but there’s something good to be said in that.”

She’s not the type I normally go for either, that’s for damn sure. She’s too prim, too proper, too sweet. “Like what?”

“There’s nothing wrong with trying something a little different sometimes. Clearly who I’ve been dating in the past hasn’t worked, since I’m still single,” she says with a self-depreciating laugh.

“I thought Dickie was your ex-boyfriend,” I point out with a wince. That is the damn worst name on the planet, I swear.

“Oh, it was never too serious with Dickie.” She waves a hand. Laughs again. “That was a long time ago, though.”

“How long?”

“I don’t know. Six months? Nine?” She tilts her head, as if she’s quietly counting back the months. “Eight months, actually. During the winter. He told me I was a bright light on a cold, dreary day once. That was nice.”

For some godforsaken reason, jealousy rises within me, making me clench my fists in my lap. “I guess he’s a goddamned poet.”

I would never think to say something like that to a woman. I’m not one to say a bunch of flowery nonsense to get between a woman’s legs. I’m a little more direct.

She seems startled by my response. “Oh, he wasn’t a poet. Not at all. That was probably the nicest thing he ever said to me while we dated.”

Huh. Well, I guess that makes me feel a little better, but not much.

And why the hell do I care what her ex-boyfriend said to her? This is a one-shot deal. I’ll take her to dinner, hopefully kiss her a little bit in the back of an Uber, maybe even feel her up a little bit too, and then we’re done. I’ll play my game tomorrow, we’ll win because that’s what we do, and then head back home.

End of story.

The server returns to the table with our drinks, making an elaborate show of popping the cork on the bottle of Veuve Clicquot before pouring us each a glass. I didn’t want any champagne, but when Susanna lifts her glass toward me in a toast, I grab mine and clink our glasses together.

“To new friends,” she says, smiling prettily.

“New friends,” I agree, downing most of the champagne in one swallow.

My Review

Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Promises” brings us the conclusion to the Web of Sin trilogy. As expected, this book has all the final pieces to the puzzle and they are revealed bit by bit. This dark and suspenseful story is filled with so many twists and turns you are sure to get whiplash. Nothing prepared me for how the story unfolded !

Araneae and Sterling have had to overcome many obstacles in their way to finding happiness and the answers to Araneae’s questions. They are the balance each other needed. Sterling has kept his promises to help Araneae uncover her family’s dark secrets, even though he is still trying to shield her. I love it when the bad guy falls hard! Sterling is not a good man, he is capable of horrible things, but he loves Araneae and will do everything he can to protect her. His devotion and love for Aranae are undeniable.

Araneae is Sterling’s weakness, but at the same time she is his strength. Araneae and Sterling are determined to deal with whatever comes their way together, and they are simply a force to be reckoned with. This book was a fitting end to the trilogy, where light overcomes darkness.

My Review

Rating : 4.5 Stars

Another fabulous story from Julie Kenner! Intriguing and addictive to read, really a compelling story told in Damien Stark’s point of view. It was refreshing to see his perspective, learning more about him was an emotional roller-coaster. The casts of characters in this series are very real to me and I love how Julie Kenner continues to develop them in each book. Damien and Nikki Stark are kindred spirits, and their relationship continues to grow with each passing book.

But evil lurks in the shadows. With a kidnapper out there determined to get to Damien, this story was a race against a master manipulator with a heart filled with a want for revenge. Damien feels out of control after his daughter’s kidnapping. He feels he has failed his family and he wants retribution.

This was another stellar entry in this series. The plot was interesting, the action kept things moving and had me on the edge of my seat. Books that have you guessing until the end are so much fun to read.

Many thanks to the author for my copy of this book!

BLURB

There’s a thin line between love and hate . . . and it cuts right through the middle of their office.

Bad boys? They run right over good girls like Georgina Keller.

But after a confidence-shattering breakup, she’s determined not to let anyone at her new workplace push her around—least of all the brooding creative director, a “bad boy of publishing” who’s made it clear she’s enemy #1.

Sebastian Quinn’s taste for fast cars, late nights, and beautiful women may have gotten him to the top of a leading New York magazine, but the reputation that made him is suddenly threatening to end his career.

Georgina can help Modern Man shed its bad reputation, but in order to do that, she’ll have to start at the top—and no amount of rakish charm or inconvenient attraction will distract her.

Because if Sebastian gets her right where he wants her, it means she’s going down.

My Review

Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this romantic comedy. The story is engrossing, the characters well developed, and the story overall enjoyable, it manages to make your heart flutter!

Sebastian Quinn is the creative director of a struggling men’s lifestyle magazine. He is also considered a bad boy of publishing. He is passionate about his job, but for the first time in his career, he has stumbled.

Georgina Keller specializes in media consulting and has been hired to work alongside Sebastian and co-manage his department. At first, Sebastian sees Georgina as a threat and a frustrating disruption to his routine. He is not used to taking orders. Their opposing management styles and personality differences complicate their forced collaboration.

I loved the way Sebastian builds his relationship with Georgina, it was truly beautiful. I loved him eventually once the hard ass persona had gone. He has adapted to his professional surroundings and adopted a public persona, his confidence has been hard earned. The author allowed Georgina and Sebastian’s conflicted feelings to shine through which in turn allowed their relationship to slowly evolve. Their bickering and falling in love was cute and fun to read.

I loved that the author did not create her drama by weakening the heroine, but rather gave us a very strong willed female lead. Georgina has strength, and perseverance. She is also able to compromise.

I loved the connection between the characters. Even through all the issues, they can joke and have fun together. What really gives this story its edge is the warmth and humor that runs through it.

Many thanks to the author and Give Me Books PR for my early copy of this book!

At the stadium’s concession stand, I took a tall stool, putting Georgina and I at eye level since she stood. “So, why didn’t you kiss François?” I asked. “Bad breath?”
She gasped into her hand. “My breath is fine.”
“I meant his. I’m sure yours is pure relish on a hotdog.”
She made a face. “Gross.”
“I happen to love relish,” I said. “But does François?”
Each time I said François with flourish, she flinched. I didn’t care. Something about him bugged me—I just couldn’t put my finger on it.
“We didn’t kiss because you interrupted us,” she pointed out.
“So? If I were in his position, and we both wanted that kiss, I wouldn’t let anyone stop me.”
Frank and I are clicking,” she said, scowling. “There was even mention of spending time at his summerhouse.”
“Hamptons?”
She coughed into her fist. “Boca Raton.”
The idea of Georgina spending a summer with him in Boca Raton was tragic enough that I almost smiled. I got the sense she was playing up the date. If it was so great, why wasn’t she sitting here with him? And why was I more relieved than smug about that? “Meanwhile, Justin and I will be clamming in Montauk.”
“You two should really just make it official and announce your love to the world.”
“But then I wouldn’t get to flirt with pretty girls.”
“For someone who pretends to have as much game as you,” she said, “I still haven’t seen you successfully flirt with any girls since I’ve known you.”
I smirked. “How do you know I’m not flirting with you right now?”

My Review

Rating : 4.5 Stars

This story picks up where the first book in the series, Juniper Smoke, left off. Kyle is desperate, Juniper walked out on him and he wants her back. He is the only man Juniper ever wanted but his ruthless behavior hurt her deeply, he betrayed her confidence. Their reunion is bittersweet and painful. Juniper is determined to make him fall in love again, but his apparent indifference breaks her heart. Kyle is back to his robotic ways and systems.

This book really creates a roller coaster of emotions for the reader. The characters became completely realistic to me. Their chemistry really made the story. It got me totally invested in their relationship and totally addicted to the story. Their mood swings and mixed signals were confusing at times. I’ll be honest, I was still a little unsure of Kyle, he is a jerk, but an irresistible one. Sadia Ash did such a great job of softening my heart towards him. The story features some very satisfying emotional growth from both Kyle and Juniper. They are as different as night and day, and yet when they come together they are the absolute best versions of each other.

The romance, the plot, the characters, all of it combines to make an absolutely unforgettable story. It’s heartbreaking, heart stopping, exciting, romantic, passionate and totally satisfying! Highly recommended!

About Sadia

Sadia Ash has held jobs in different fields that involved writing (and never math) in some way. She has worked for film and TV publicity with the Prenner Group, did news and TV placement for Aeros (a NASA project), edited scripts for indie films, and fundraised. A lot. A serial volunteer, she has raised funds for many charities that educate and help girls in disenfranchised regions.

Currently working on two novels, a TV show, and a film script, Ash is addicted to British shows, lattes, and sushi, though her fictional characters, thankfully, don’t have such banal tastes and uneventful lives. She holds an MA English degree from Loyola University in Chicago, a Screenwriting Certificate from UCLA and Masters in English Literature from NUML. Hailing from Chicago, she now lives in California with her husband, two teens, and Misha Collins, their cat.

Across the Horizon by Aly Martinez #review

“Sometimes love happens when you least expect it.” That was what my husband’s mistress told me the day I found out about their affair.

I didn’t believe it until five minutes later when mouth-watering celebrity chef Tanner Reese walked up, tossed his arm around my shoulders, and told my cheating husband to take a hike.

Tanner and I couldn’t have been more different. He spent his weekends at clubs, rubbing elbows with fellow A-listers. I spent mine in yoga pants with cheese boards and a glass of wine—or six.

Our relationship shouldn’t have worked, but it did. That is until Tanner proved to me that even though love happens when you least expect it…

So does heartbreak.

My Review

Rating : 4 Stars

This book was an engaging and sweet, yet angsty romance, which featured Tanner Reese the younger brother of the main character from The Darkest Sunrise Duet, Porter Reese.

Tanner is a dreamy hero and a celebrity adored by thousands of fans. His show is the number one cooking show on television and made him millions. He lives in the spotlight and having a private life is complicated.

Rita Hartley is at a crossroads both professionally and privately. She is the office manager of her husband’s private practice, but her married life was a lie and her husband cheated on her. Her ability to trust has been shattered.

Tanner and Rita have a simmering attraction and chemistry, something that instantly drew me in. The portion of the story that is amusing is the fact that both characters have zero plans on falling for the other. Yet they are both so obviously attracted to everything about the other.

Both characters were strong and well developed with very real emotions and flaws. I loved how the author didn’t just brush away their problems and actually dealt with the issues.

It was awesome to see Tanner open his eyes to the life he wants. The only little gripe I had overall was that I would like to have seen less drama with Rita’s ex-husband. But overall, this was an entertaining read.

My honest review is based on an advanced reader copy of this book. Thank you for stopping by!

I shifted the phone to my other ear and asked her, “Did you just get in bed?”

“If, by bed, you mean carrying a glass of wine out back to swing in the hammock, maybe.”

I bit my bottom lip, my head falling back against the headrest. For most men, this would have been an innocuous statement. But for a hammock connoisseur like myself, this was the normal guy equivalent of her saying that she liked to give blowjobs during halftime.

“You have a hammock out back?”

There was a delay in her response, which was followed by a subtle kiss of her lips on what I assumed was a wine glass. “Don’t knock it until you try it. It’s one of the most underrated luxuries in outdoor furniture.”

“Oh, I’m not knocking anything. Rope or quilted?”

“Mayan, actually.”

“Oh, sweet heavenly baby Jesus, she’s beautiful and knows her hammocks. I’ve never been so turned on in my life.”

She giggled, pausing for another sip. “You know, if you leaked this hammock fetish to the press, you could probably increase demand by five million percent and singlehandedly lower the country’s unemployment rate.”

Okay, so at some point during the day, she’d figured out who I was.

But! Even with this knowledge, she was trying to avoid a date with me and was not elbow-deep in planning our televised wedding. This was a definite plus in my book.

“Yeah, but then, when I talked to beautiful women like yourself, I’d have no idea if the hammock was your idea or a ploy to impress me.”

“Jeez, that’s sad, Tanner,” she said, her sweet Southern accent like a wave rolling over my name.

I’d meant it as a joke, but it was the absolute truth when it came to dating. Early on in my career, I’d done a rapid-fire interview about my personal life. One of the questions had been: What would your ideal woman order on the first date? Truth be told, the only thing I hoped my ideal woman would order was something she wanted. I didn’t factor into that. But I’d been on my last question in my last interview of the last day of a month-long press tour. My face had hurt from fake smiling, I’d been in desperate need of a shower, a smoke, and sleep, and my mind had been mush, so I’d prattled off the first thing that had come to mind: shrimp and grits.

That one little answer somehow made it onto my Wiki page, and after that, every woman I’d taken out ordered shrimp and grits. One of them even had a shellfish allergy and nearly ended up in the hospital. And this insanity was not limited to women outside of the spotlight.

I’d once gone on a date with America’s princess of pop, Levee Williams. We’d hit it off at a charity event. For one of the most famous women in the world, she was a surprisingly nice girl, gorgeous, and funny as all get out. But the first time I took her out? One guess what she ordered.

I was at the end of my rope with dating and lost my freaking mind before storming out like an asshole. That night, as I was reporting shrimp and fucking grits as an error to Wiki, I noticed that her page listed it as her favorite food. I’d never had the balls to contact her again, and I once hid behind a palm tree on Rodeo Drive when I heard the clamoring of paparazzi calling her name. But that’s neither here nor there.

In short, while finding a woman was all too easy, dating was hard.

But that wasn’t about to stop me from trying with Rita.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
