My Review

Rating : 4.5 out of 5 Stars

Dayum, this book is a thrilling read! Meghan March’s riveting and edgy storytelling took my breath away! This story was addictive from the get-go.  I read it in one sitting and it kept me up late at night reading!

When her family distillery teeters on the edge of failure, Keira Kilgore is thrust in a mesmerizing mind game with a powerful and enigmatic man. Keira owes him a debt and he fully intends to collect. Complicated does not even begin to describe Lachlan Mount, the hero of this story. Complex, intense, manipulative and ruthless, he exudes power, control and dominance. This bold, fascinating  character lives in a world of deceit and secrets and controls an underworld empire he runs with an iron fist. He has an air of mystery surrounding him and Keira is irresistibly drawn to him. Meghan March does a great job of building up the tension between them. Their sexual chemistry is intense, dark and highly erotic. There is definitely a thin line between love and hate in this story.

I loved the back and forth between them, that left me guessing what was going to happen next. Keira is strong, feisty and resilient, definitely not one to back down from a challenge. But she is dealing with a ruthless and seductive master manipulator who wants her weak and powerless. She is forced to accept his deal to save her distillery. And yet she refuses to surrender.

I was mesmerized by the deep layers of emotional complexity, palpable tension and angsty feels throughout this dark and mysterious story. It was compulsively readable, deliciously dirty and exceptionally hot. And did I mention a final twist that took me by surprise? The author definitely played with my emotions and left me begging for more!

My Review

Rating : 4 out of 5 Stars

Donna Alward has hit all the right notes with this uplifting Christmas novella set in the small town of Darling, a charming place with colorful and quirky residents. When I read “Someone Like You” the first installment in the Darling, VT, series, a lonely character definitely caught my attention. George Reilly was a homeless man who lived most of the time in the town shelter or in the streets, until Lauren Gallagher offered him a job at her garden center and helped him find a place to stay. George is a military veteran who reacted to the war trauma with a sense of self-blame and hopelessness.

His quiet life is disrupted when Amy Merck appears in town. Amy was his best friend Ian’s sister. They were friends in the past, but George had cut all ties since his return from deployment. Amy stirs emotions George hasn’t felt in years and he isn’t ready to let his guard down. And yet Amy is persistent, she is determined to win him over. They can help each other to finally lay the ghosts of the past to rest, and start a new and better life.

I loved reading about this couple, their evolving relationship and the way they make each other better. Despite the novella format, I had the feeling that I got to know the characters. Donna Alward creates engaging, relatable characters and well-written, charming and romantic stories that I enjoy reading.

Holiday Q& A with Donna Alward:

When do the holidays official start for you?

December 1 – or the weekend just preceding it. That’s when we get out the decorations and go crazy.

What’s your favorite thing about the holidays?

THE MOVIES. I love sitting with my kids (who are of the nearly-adult variety) and watching holiday movies with a glass of wine or hot cocoa.

Are there any holiday traditions you do every year without fail?

Tons! There are certain things we bake. We have a whole bunch of Christmas Eve traditions, including a barbecue (steak!), putting presents under the tree, going for a drive to see the lights, and watching The Polar Express. And even at their age, they still ask me to read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.

What’s your favorite holiday movie?

I have too many – my fave depends on my mood. Top contenders: Christmas Vacation, Christmas with the Kranks, White Christmas, Love Actually, The Polar Express.

Do you have a favorite holiday book?

Hmmm. I don’t tend to re-read holiday themed books, but I’ll confess that I have a soft spot for any (all) of the Christmas books in the Chesapeake Shores series. Those O’Briens… 🙂

What’s your all-time favorite holiday song?

Nat King Cole’s version of The Christmas Song. Simplicity and nostalgia all rolled into one smooth voice.

What’s your favorite activity during fall or winter?

Cozy nights with a glass of wine and a book. LOL! Seriously though, I miss living near the Rockies, because the skiing there spoiled me for anywhere else.

What’s your favorite gift you’ve ever received or given?

One year my sister put together a recipe book with our mom’s fave recipes over the years. She added some of her own, too, but if I want something that Mom used to make back in the eighties? It’s in that book!

Do you have any items on your wish list this year?

Yes! Yoga socks, books, and a kindle.

Any resolutions or goals for next year?

Do better. 🙂

The best gift of all is the one you share with someone else. . .

From the moment he strode through the iron gate and into the offices of Two Love Lane on a crisp December day, it was obvious that Deacon Banks was something different. He wasn’t a Charleston native, not with that adorable Yankee accent. And unlike the usual client at the elegant matchmaking agency, he had no interest in finding a woman to marry—just a few no-strings dates while he was in town.

Macy Frost takes her professional services very seriously—how could she not, when she’s rumored to be a direct descendant of Cupid? Tech entrepreneur Deacon says he’s just trying to make his social-climbing aunt happy by being seen out and about with a few prominent beauties, but Macy insists she can make her client fall in love…for real. And Deacon can’t help but think she might be right. As charming as the palmetto trees and magnificent harbor may be, it’s the beautiful, breath-of-fresh-air Macy who’s become Deacon’s favorite part of the scenery. But can the hopelessly romantic Southern belle stop trying to fix him up and just let Cupid do his work on her own heart?

Fate brings Ty and Aiyla together, but will tragedy tear them apart?
THRILL OF LOVE
The Bradens at Peaceful Harbor, MD #6
Melissa Foster
Releasing Oct 4, 2017
World Literary Press

Do you believe in fate?

World-renowned mountain climber and nature photographer Ty Braden never believed in second dates, much less heart-pounding, steal-his-breath love. But that was before a trip to Saint-Luc, where he met funny, strong, and entrancingly beautiful Aiyla Bell, a ski instructor and fellow photographer whose hopes and dreams, and love of the outdoors, aligned perfectly with his—and whose kisses alone turned him inside out.

After spending five magical days and four sweet, soulful nights falling in love, Aiyla couldn’t imagine a day without Ty. But when he asked her to go with him on his next assignment, his reputation for having women at his beck and call stopped her from upending the life she’d worked so hard to create.

Months later fate steps in when a chance encounter brings Ty and Aiyla together for a five-day wilderness event held in the Colorado Mountains. Their deep, passionate connection is stronger than ever, and Ty is bound and determined not to lose her again. But when tragedy strikes and their worlds are turned upside down, their love faces the truest test of all.

 My Review

Rating : 4 out of 5 Stars

Melissa Foster’s writing style kept me hooked from the first to the last page.  The love that grows between the heroes of this story can be easily felt by the readers, you definitely want the best for them. To me the best kind of romance novel is one in which the reader actually feels like they get to know the characters. And you definitely get that feeling with this second chance story.

Ty Braden and Aiyla Bell met and the attraction between them was instant. They have a lot in common, they share the same love of adventure. Ty is a world renowned photographer and he is known as a womanizer, he is charming, attractive and successful.  In this story, Aiyla is the one who got away to protect her heart. But fate intervened and brought them together.

I loved Ty and Aiyla, as a couple they were perfect together.  Aiyla had gone through some really tough times so she truly deserved some happiness in her life and Ty came along just at the right time. This couple was amazing and likeable right away, there was something magical when they’re together, they radiate positive energy. The love that grows between them can be easily felt by the reader. They are honest and straightforward with their feelings and attraction towards each other. There was no hiding, or fighting against it, even though it is new territory for both of them.

I found “Thrill of Love” to be a sweet, romantic and emotional read. It is not a light romance, some passages are deeply moving, but it is a story of hope with a wonderful and perfect ending that brought happy tears to my eyes. I loved the characters’ journey, Aiyla’s courage and strength through tough times tugged at my heart strings. And through all the issues, problems, and struggles the characters have to work through, the Braden family stays strong and supportive.

My Review

Rating : 4 out of 5 Stars

This friends-to-lovers romance is an intense read of heartbreak, emotional healing and salvation, with a lot of angst. A fast-moving plot and easy dialogue made the book read quite fluidly. I found that the author told the characters’ story in a very evocative way and handled hard subject matters with great delicacy. This new adult novel features a college freshman, Beth, and David, her brother’s best friend.

Beth has a troubled family history, that led her to develop feelings of emptiness and betrayal that nearly pushed her over the edge. But she is a survivor and she is lucky enough to have a deep and lasting friendship with David, her knight in shining armor and protector.

I loved David, he is a swoon worthy hero who is just a solid, thoughtful and genuinely nice guy. He is also overprotective and it makes Beth lose her cool! Beth and David’s verbal sparring was so much fun, the push and pull was brilliant. Their rocky relationship is filled with sexual tension. David feels conflicted about his attraction to Beth, but he can’t fight it and his jealousy is overwhelming. Beth is in denial of her true feelings for David.

Their discussions and arguments build the heat and intensity. Beth has been hurt in a previous relationship and she will never forgive herself if she makes herself vulnerable again. You find yourself screaming in your head at Beth to open her eyes and realize that he is the one for her, but it takes some time for her to get there. Her demons are still lurking in the shadows of her mind, she is struggling to keep it all together while fighting off her feelings for David.

This book is a fast and easy read with deep feelings, witty banter, dirty secrets and strong language, that pulled me in from the first page. I loved the unexpected twists in the story. Danielle Pearl did a great job of tying up all loose ends and giving me the satisfying HEA that I wanted for the characters. Their path to happiness was bumpy, but made for a great read! This book is a standalone, told in alternate point of view, from Beth and David’s perspective.

Excerpt

Beth startles when she notices me, and she stops walking, so I make up the distance still between us. She looks adorable as all hell in those tight jeans and loose racerback tank top. Her bra shows at her sides and I’m equally turned on and annoyed by it. She never did have any kind of self-awareness. At least not when it comes to how goddamned attractive she is. And it bugs me that every guy that’s passed her today has caught a glimpse of that black lace.

I shove my hand through my hair. “Beth,” I sigh.

I wait for her to go off on me again, but she doesn’t. She just kind of looks up at me, her resentment a palpable thing. I can’t stand to see her look at me like that. But what makes my lungs burn is knowing that I deserve her resentment. She has no idea how much. Fuck, I hope to God she never will. Especially not now that she’s come so far—that she’s doing so well. Well enough to tell me off in public, at my own party, anyway.

But not tonight, it seems, and when she still doesn’t say anything at all, I make my attempt. “Look, I’m sorry, okay? I thought I was protecting you.”

“I don’t need protection,” she counters.

I nod. “I know. I just thought…Falco being around would give you an excuse to hide away in your dorm, and I wanted you to experience…”

“Experience what, David?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. Fucking life, I guess.”

Beth looks down at her shoes. I hate that she won’t even look at me. “Okay, whatever,” she murmurs.

“Whatever?” I repeat incredulously. Here I am, apologizing—something I’m not exactly fucking known for—and all she has to say is whatever?

“Yeah. Whatever. I get it. It just sucks, you know?”

I take a much-needed deep breath. “I know, Bea.”

At last her eyes meet mine, hostility finally gone. I take the opportunity to retrieve my new peace offering from my back pocket. Well, not new. My worn and weathered copy of Hamlet, riddled with years’ worth of my own highlights and notes, its pages filled with more of my own words than those of the author himself. I hope it will help in her Shakespeare class. If nothing else, it will give her an invasive insight into who I am and how I think, just like all the other books I’ve given her over the years, and I wonder if she realizes just how personal it is.

She takes it, her thin brows pinched together in confused awe. “This is your copy,” she breathes.

Suddenly I feel too vulnerable, uncomfortably exposed. “Thought it could help in your class,” I half-lie. Because it’s more than that, and I suspect she knows it.

Her pretty pink lips twist into a small smile, her cheeks going even rounder than usual, and it hits me right in the chest. Not for the first time I tell myself the affection I feel for her is strictly familial. More lies.

“Thanks.”

I smile. “You eat dinner yet?”

She shrugs. “I was gonna heat a cup of noodles and study.”

Cup of fucking noodles? “Fuck that. Come to the Stu-U. Let’s get some real food.”

Beth rolls her eyes. “Fine. But just some quick food, okay? I really need to study.”

“There are more things in heaven and earth, Bea,” I smirk at her, and she sets free a short giggle. There it is.

I take her girly-ass backpack and slip it over my shoulder, giving her no choice but to follow me. But as soon as I turn around, my eyes catch on that same guy, just as he’s averting his gaze. Only this time he wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at Beth; I’m sure of it. Rage rushes through my veins, and I grit my teeth. I don’t know who the fuck this guy is, but there’s something off about him, and there’s absolutely nothing good about Beth drawing his attention.

My jaw clenches. I slip my arm protectively around her shoulders, despite just having been scolded for being overprotective. “Beth, in two seconds, I want you to subtly glance to your left, between buildings B and C, okay?”

Her brows pinch together again. She looks so damned cute when she does that. She doesn’t wait the two seconds, and her “subtle glance” is more of a full-on stare. “Glance,” I whisper-growl. I wait until she’s facing forward again, and then start leading her from the quad. “Did you see that guy?” I ask her.

She nods hesitantly.

“Do you know him?”

“Yeah. I mean, no. He’s in my Abnormal Psych class. And I saw him last night.”

“Saw him doing what?”

“The same thing. Standing around smoking cigarettes like a fucking creep.”

“I think he was looking at you,” I admit.

“And that.”

So this isn’t the first time that guy’s been staring at Beth. Unease swirls in my gut. “Stay away from him,” I warn her.

“Do you know him?” she asks uncertainly.

“No. But I don’t like the way he was looking at you.”

Of course, I’ve never liked the way any guys have looked at her.

My Review

Rating : 4.5 out of 5 Stars

A chance meeting leads to so much more in this new installment in Victoria Denault’s Hometown Players series. The author definitely caught my interest with this series about famous hockey players and the women in their lives.

Alex Larue is a popular French-Canadian athlete, known for his grit, determination and his irresistible charm, he is the heartthrob hockey fangirls want to date. He has it all, the looks, the money and the media attention. Despite his questionable womanizing ways, he is a romantic at heart and a genuinely generous person. His personal history inspired him to get involved in charity work. He is a hero you won’t forget, delightfully cocky, selfless and caring. He really is a sincere and no-nonsense hero.

Alex has a troubled past, he overcame childhood adversity to go from rags to riches, thanks to his hard work and perseverance. He focused on growing as a person and becoming unbeatable in the game he loved. And yet, his fear of rejection is overwhelming.
Brit Bennett manages a living facility for teenagers without family. Through a difficult childhood, she was blessed when a wealthy couple adopted her and showed her true affection. She is privileged and she is is aware of it.

The attraction between Alex and Brit is instant, but both of them are practical and neither wants to deal with a relationship. I loved watching these two very pragmatic characters fall for each other against their better judgement. They both had to overcome prejudices and deal with emotional issues. But they couldn’t pretend their mutual feelings didn’t exist. There is much more to both of these characters than meets the eye. The chemistry between them was tangible, their romance was sweet and touching. This was a great read that really tugged at my heartstrings, I definitely recommend it!

Excerpt

I look around at Alex’s sparse apartment. There’s a sectional, an ottoman, but no chairs, bookcases or pictures. The nook for his bedroom only contains one three-drawer dresser. His bedside lamp is on the floor beside the bed because it doesn’t have night tables. “You don’t seem to like things.”

He shrugs, and those deep blue eyes find mine. “I don’t have a lot of things from my past worth holding on to.”

Oh, this man… I reach up and gently cup the side of his face. He grasps my hand and I think he’s going to pull it away, but he doesn’t. He holds it to his face and pushes into it. He’s like a puppy looking for love, and I want desperately to give it to him. But he won’t let me.

“And you seem to want to throw away things now that are worth holding on to.” I force myself to step back and start walking toward the front door because if I don’t leave now I’ll let things happen that are going to mean more to me than they should. Than he wants them to. But his words stop me in my tracks.

“I don’t know how to be a boyfriend, Brie.” The look of pure confusion on his face would be comical if we were still talking about his inability to run a dishwasher. But we’re talking about feelings here. “The only thing I’ve ever committed to was hockey and even it tried to reject me. Hell, in a way every time I get traded, I feel like it still is. But it’s a thing, not a person. Hockey doesn’t have a choice, but you do.”

I start to walk back into the kitchen as he turns away from me to look out the window. “People who have had the choice to keep me in their lives never have.”

Thank God he’s turned away because I actually press my palm to my heart to keep it from cracking. Holy shit. I have no idea how anyone would walk away from him – the man and his big, broken heart –because what I want to do is run to him. “Give me that choice and I’ll change your track record.”

He grunts and turns back to face me. “You’re this amazing, stubborn, gorgeous woman who wants more than the one thing I know I can give. And as much as I suddenly, for the first time in my life, want to try and give more, I’m so fucking clueless as to how.”

I walk right up to him so we’re toe to toe. “You want to know how? You just do it. You let me in. You take the chance, like you do every time you step onto the ice. You don’t know if you’ll win or lose, but you play the game anyway and you take the shots on net even if you don’t know if you’re going to score. So tell me you want this. Take the shot.”

He nuzzles my hand and but then turns his face and kisses my palm. When he turns back to me he looks so serious it’s startling. “I want this.”

I smile. It’s not big, but I feel it inside me from my toes to the roots of my hair. “Game on?”

He smiles back, raw but darkly playful. “Game on.”
