Review : In Bed with the Billionaire ( Nine Circles #5) by Jackie Ashenden

Publication : November 1st 2016 by St. Martin’s Paperbacks

Rating : 4 out of 5 stars

Jackie Ashenden has delivered a dark story about a powerful man on a mission and the woman trained to kill him. This story was pacy, addictive, sexy and well-written.

Temple is a hit woman. Her latest target is the most famous crime lord in Europe, Jericho, aka Theodore Fitzgerald. He is going to be her last contract, the one she has wanted to fulfill for a long time. Jericho has a cold and aloof personality, never showing emotions. Getting close to him is a gamble and being at his mercy is utterly dangerous. Jericho is a murderer, drug dealer and human trafficker, no less! This character was complex and dark, but definitely not the person he seemed to be. Surprisingly, he intends to pull down the crime empire he has patiently built over the years, taking down a huge human trafficking network in the process. The author gives a nuanced picture of Jericho, he is conflicted, broken by his actions and doesn’t deny he is a bad man. But he hopes that the end will justify the means.

Temple is a threat he immediately identifies, she challenges and intrigues him. She is loyal and determined, but her feelings for Theo get in the way of her mission. Their attraction was undeniable and felt real. They both enjoy pushing boundaries and they understand one another. These characters are flawed, but the author managed to make me root for them, no matter what!

This book grabs you from the first page, with its angsty, gripping and intense storyline and intriguing characters. It is part of a series, but the fact that I hadn’t read the previous installments didn’t prevent me from enjoying Theo and Temple’s story of hope.

Pull me close and hold me tight.

This book is making the buzz and it’s totally deserved, in my opinion. The author has woven a unique story, with dialogues that felt real and unforgettable characters. She tackles the subject of mental illness and PTSD with talent and sensibility.

Katherine Wilson used to be happy and carefree, until a traumatic event changed her life. Meeting Nico Moreno, the owner of the most exclusive and famous Miami Beach nightclub should not have been in the cards for her. She lives as a recluse with her cat, never leaving her apartment, and is scared of about everything. Yet, she accepted to attend her sister’s engagement party. But once inside the nightclub, she suffers from a panic and anxiety attack. The author makes you feel Katherine’s panic and the way she thinks she is losing her mind. I was glued to my kindle reading those lines!

Nico mistakes her for a junkie at first, her symptoms are very similar to drug addiction. He has an urge to help her, but doesn’t understand her strange behavior. He has suffered a lot of his father’s mistakes and is mad at the world. Helping Katherine is his way to canalize his anger, and transform it in a positive feeling. But he has totally entered unknown territory with her, despite their obvious connection.

Nico’s journey of acceptance of Katherine’s limitations was a great read. His character grew so much over the course of the story, and it felt real. Their story is a slow burn. Step by step, Nico saves Katherine from herself, convincing her to do things outside of her comfort zone and giving her a sense of safety. Katherine didn’t realize how much she craved human interactions until she met Nico.

I loved the intensity and authenticity of this story. This book is a gripping and emotional read, that kept me hooked until the very last page. Pull Me Close is the first standalone in a new series, and is told in dual POV.

Taking care of a Great Dane with separation anxiety can result in a life-changing encounter! In this second installment in Jessica Lemmon’s Billionaire Bad Boys series, we get to meet Tag Crane, a colorful hotel magnate with a quirky personality. He is definitely not your stereotypical billionaire playboy. This character was unique in his own way, a man with a big heart, looking like a Viking or a long-haired wrestler! The heroine, Rachel Foster, has accepted a temporary job of house and dog sitter, in the luxurious Crane Tower, owned by Tag. After a bad break-up, she is broke and aching.

Rachel and Tag’s first interactions are tense, due to the dog’s barks, and riddled with misunderstanding. They are temporary neighbors, though and tend to meet frequently. Tag is intrigued by Rachel. She is secretive and he wants to know more about her. Rachel is decided to be careful with Tag, she has been burned is a previous relationship. But she wants to have some fun and be bold. Their relationship progressed with a lot of push and pull and playful antics.

Although Tag is a consummate bachelor, allergic to commitment, he is not a player. I loved his fun, light and kind personality. I felt however that his attraction to Rachel was a bit forced at first. But I enjoyed the dynamic between them, their easy banter. Rachel is lively, selfless and independent. She doesn’t want Tag to pull any strings or give her money. Obviously, they both need to overcome their fears and prejudice, before the stars can align properly for them!

I love Jessica Lemmon’s voice, her vibrant, appealing characters, realistic dialogue and perfect balance between humor and emotions. It was great to catch up on Merina and Reese, the heroes from “The Billionaire Bachelor”, they remain my favorite couple in this series. There was no epilogue but I expect to read more about Tag and Rachel in the next book, featuring the third brother, Eli. This book can be read as a standalone and is perfect for fans of romantic, heartwarming and sexy stories.

When she reached the door, she pulled her fingers through her blond hair, and decided her visitor had earned the penalty of seeing her sloppy hair, leftover makeup, and pale blue flannel pajamas with a polar bear and snowflake design.

She turned the knob and blinked, stunned.

Holy crap, there is a mountain man at my door.

She was faced with wide, round shoulders. A waterfall of caramel-brown, slightly wavy hair cascaded down his arms. He wore a closely trimmed beard, his mouth flat beneath it. One eyebrow was arched over the bluest eyes she’d ever seen.

“Hello,” she managed, before jerking her gaze from his assaulting blues to take in the fitted cream-colored sweater, a pair of gray cargo pants, and laced leather boots.

He was like a sexy city lumberjack.

“Hi.”

Oh. That voice. Deep, rich, and low enough that it registered in her belly.

When his eyes dashed away from her face and he smiled, her brain turned to mush. She couldn’t think of a thing to say. Not a single thing.

“There he is. Hey, buddy.” The giant knelt as Adonis meandered through the living room, pausing to do a downward-dog stretch in front of the man’s feet. The dog received a scrub on the head, and she was rewarded with more of her guest’s low voice. “You’re better today, yeah? Sleep okay?”

Meanwhile, Rachel gawked at the two of them. Her appearance was probably less put-together than the dog’s. She ran her fingers through her hair again, making it worse at this point, and straightened her pajama top futilely. There was no escaping that she looked as if she’d crawled out of bed after a late, late night.

The man stood. “Typically, Adonis has had his walk by now, but I didn’t see you at the elevator, so…”

She squinted one eye and finally her brain chugged into gear.

Oh. Oh.

Oliver had mentioned a dog walker, but Rachel had sworn he said he’d postponed the walks while she was staying here. But since he was here, he may as well take Adonis. She wasn’t anywhere near ready to go for a stroll in the snow.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” She went to where the leash was hanging—on a hook inside the pantry—retrieved it, and chased Adonis for a few irritating seconds while he turned in circles in excitement. “I took him out at three in the morning, so I’m not sure if he’ll have to…you know.” Dog clipped, she handed the leash to the ridiculously good-looking man at her door. “Do you bring your own poop bags? Or do you…” The man was looking at her like she’d sprouted a third eye, so she swept the topic away with one hand. “You know what? I’ll just grab one.”

She shot him a tight smile, went back to the pantry, and returned with a bag made for Adonis’s business. She offered it to the guy, who was holding tight to Adonis’s leash while the pooch lunged for the elevator. The man didn’t budge, despite the dog’s strength.

“Where’s Oliver?” he asked.

She frowned as she crinkled the plastic bag against her body. “You mean he didn’t tell you? He’s on a business trip. I’m housesitting.”

“You his niece?” he asked after running a long gaze down then up to her face again.

She laughed. “No, not at all. He’s one of my regulars. Odd, right? But we hit it off and he likes me, so…”

The man’s frown deepened, those gorgeous eyes darkening to stormy blue. “I’m not the dog walker.” He offered the leash but Adonis stayed in the hallway rather than coming back inside. “I’m an upstairs neighbor.”

“Oh. Oh my God! I’m so sorry!” Rachel took the leash and wrestled with Adonis, who was much, much stronger than she. He knew it. The dog spread his feet wide and stood his ground on the carpeted floor.

“I suggest you find a way to keep him quiet at night while you’re out. I work from home and I can’t listen to him bark for hours.”

Hours?

“If I were anyone else, a noise complaint would be in your future. Oliver follows the rules. He wouldn’t like knowing you’re breaking a big one.” That low voice had dropped lower, the reprimand having the dual result of both pissing her off and making her feel a little tingly.

God. I need more sleep.

“No need to be rude,” she snapped. He blinked, surprised. Probably not used to being put in his place.

Look at him. He’s a wall. Who would stand up to him?

Then she remembered his kind smile, the way his hands rubbed Adonis’s flank with rugged gentleness. A shiver climbed her spine at the same time Adonis jerked hard on the leash.

She expelled a dainty “oh!” and lunged forward at the same time the man in the doorway caught the leash in one hand and her against him. Rachel found every part of her from thighs to breasts plastered to the giant’s body. Her palms flattened over two hard pectoral muscles hidden beneath the sweater, her legs bumping his legs, which felt as solid as two marble columns. She tilted her head, met those aqua blue eyes and…and…remembered she hadn’t brushed her teeth yet.

She shoved off his rock-hard stomach, slapping a palm over her mouth. Then she gave a hard tug to Adonis’s leash, who turned with a sigh and paced back inside. Once he was clear of the door, she sent the hard-bodied hunk at the threshold a glare and slammed the door in his face.

Adonis yipped his disappointment at losing the chance to go outside.

“You’ll have to take him out now!” came a shout through the door. “Don’t blue-ball the poor guy after taking him halfway.”

Adonis wagged his tail so hard, he nearly took out a lamp. The hulk at the door was right. There was no way she could turn down the Dane’s pale eyes and smiling pink mouth, perked pointy ears, and lolling tongue.

“Fine,” she growled and stomped for the bedroom. She snatched up her boots and hastily picked out her clothes, feeling both tired and cranky. Yet as she tugged on her coat, she found her mouth curving into a half-smile.

Blue balls.

Who was that guy?

Baron is the second full length novel in Joanna Shupe’s series about a group of business tycoons in Gilded Age, a period that fascinates me. After reading and enjoying “Magnate” and “Tycoon”, I had high expectations for Will Sloane’s story! I had my doubts about him, though. He wasn’t the most engaging character, but rather a pompous and sanctimonious jerk!

William Sloane is New York City’s prince. He is wealthy, influent and runs one of the biggest companies in the country. Will wants to increase his political clout and is candidate for the gubernatorial election. He is worried, though. His partner on the ticket is influenced by Ava Jones, aka Mme Zolikoff, a famous medium. The scandal could cost them the election and his reputation would suffer if she decided to reveal the personal details she has learned about his running mate.

Ava doesn’t accept Will’s accusations of knowingly swindling people. She is not ashamed of her activities. Her aim is to to take care of her siblings and save up enough money to move to the countryside. Ava is a great character, she is stubborn, independent and dedicated to her family. Her honesty can be questioned, but she feels it’s the price to pay to keep her family fed and safe. She is hardened by the realities of her life. She is not impressed by Will’s overbearing and arrogant attitude. Although Will and Ava are at odds all the time, they have great chemistry. Will is attracted to her like a moth to a flame and is flummoxed by her attitude. She mocks him and is insulted by his offer to become his dirty little secret. Behind a façade of aloofness, Will hides his deep insecurities. He is kind and tender, but also demanding and complicated. Is he the prince of an impossible fairy tale or Ava’s partner in life?

This story was an absolute delight and I read it until the wee hours of the morning! I love this series and have become a fan of Joanna Shupe’s storytelling and vibrant, passionate characters. The setting was well-developed, with interesting period details. And frankly, I can’t resist a beautiful story of love triumphing over all obstacles. If you are looking for a swoony, heart melting, sexy and witty historical romance, this book is a great pick. It can be read as a standalone, but I definitely recommend the whole series.

Two more steps brought Will alongside her. “Are you always so difficult?”

She threw her head back and laughed—a genuine, sultry sound that hit him square in the gut. He pushed down the reaction, put it in a place with all the other things he ignored.

“Only with men who try to boss me around.”

“A lot of those in your life?”

“Just one, apparently. Any ideas on how to get rid of him?”

Will’s lips twitched from suppressing a smile. “No, unless you’re ready to give in. I won’t disappear until you leave John alone.”

She stopped in her tracks and put her hands on her hips. Her brown gaze lit up with fire and brimstone, her generous bosom heaving in a distractingly enticing manner. “Why do you care so much? Your money could buy whatever election you wanted, cover up any hint of scandal that might occur. Therefore, you don’t really care about what I’m doing to John. Tell me, why are you following me? ’Cause I need to tell you, I’m not buying it.”

What the hell was she implying? That he was after her? His muscles clenched as he stepped closer, hoping to intimidate her with their difference in height. Surprisingly, she held her ground, merely lifted a brow as if to say, Get on with it. He tried not to be impressed.

“First, I would never use my money to buy an election. I want to win, and I mean to do that fairly. Second, I can cover up just about any scandal I want, but all it takes is one whiff, one hint of impropriety, and my political career will be over before it begins. I’ll be a laughingstock. And there’s no way I’ll allow that to happen.”

“No, John will be a laughingstock. John’s political career will be over. And”—she made a disbelieving sound—“you act as if New York politics are clean and fair. We both know politicians are dirtier than chimney sweeps, and that’s saying something.”

“I wouldn’t throw stones at the legitimacy of other vocations, were I you.”

“Oh!” She threw up her hands and stomped away. “Leave me alone, William Sloane.”

He trailed after her, catching up in a few steps. “You’re wrong. In my world, you’re judged not only on your own actions, but the actions of those around you. The company you keep. If John goes down, I go down as well.”

“Then I can only imagine what your world would think of you keeping company with me in the Tenderloin.”

“They’d think I’d lost my ever-loving mind,” he muttered.

“Then scurry back home to Fifth Avenue. I’m sure your butler has brandy and cigars waiting. No one here is stopping you.”

“Washington Square.”

Her head swung toward him. “Pardon?”

“I live on Washington Square.” It had been a long time since he’d had to tell anyone that. The Sloanes had been in that location since the city covered up the graves and converted the space to a public park.

“Oh, excuse me,” she said with mock sincerity. “Scurry back home to Washington Square.”

“After you promise to stop your shenanigans with John.”

“Sloane!”

The voice came from behind them, so he spun to see who was there. A few people were out, but no one close enough. No one came forward or even met his eye. Who had called his name?

Strange.

Facing forward, he instantly noticed something else. He was now alone.

“Ava?” Feet planted, his gaze swept the sidewalk and the street, searching. He peered across to the other side, thinking maybe she had crossed the street. Nothing.

There was no sign of her. She had disappeared into thin air.

Shep.

We grew up together. We played Ghost in the Graveyard. Had our own rock band. It didn’t matter that he was five years older than me. It didn’t matter that he looked at me as a kid sister even as I grew into a woman. It didn’t even matter when he left me behind to go to college and start his adult life.

He’d be back.

He was always meant to be mine.

He came back, all right. But instead of smelling of promises, he stunk of betrayal. And he destroyed me—us—the day he married my sister instead of me.

I married his brother, Kael.

My review

Rating : 5 out of 5 Stars

This book was a great surprise. This is my first read by K.L. Kreig and I didn’t know what to expect. But once I started reading this book, I was lost to the world and I couldn’t put it down. So even if, like me, you are not a fan of love triangles, you should definitely give this story a chance. The writing is excellent and the storytelling is simply breathtaking. This unforgettable story had layers upon layers of emotional complexity, palpable tension, angsty, gut-wrenching feels and some panty-melting hot scenes. The combination of present and past storytelling was well executed and created an intense and gripping suspense, that kept me hooked until the very last page of the epilogue. I had no idea how this story would end, though!

Maverick DeSoto loves two men, but one of them only as a very dear friend. Kael Shepard has been her best friend since childhood. He is very precious to her but the one she has loved all her life is his older brother Killian. She married Kael and she knows he deserves so much more than her friendship.

Kael is a wonderful character, outgoing, kind, charming and definitely swoon-worthy! He has always loved Maverick unconditionally, patiently waiting for her. He gives her his love freely and without expectations. Despite being still affected by Killian, Maverick can’t stand the idea of losing Kael. The rivalry between the two brothers was heartbreaking. It took me a while to like Maverick, until I understood her struggle and felt her sincerity.

This story had a major twist that made me question everything. But the author definitely gave me the ending I wanted! This book is a definite keeper on my shelf and I can’t recommend it enough!

My review

Rating : 4 out of 5 Stars

Hayden Walkers is heir to a dynasty of career politicians. As such, he is expected by his family to run for a seat of senator in his home state of North Carolina. But Hayden already has a job. He is fire captain in his hometown and he loves his job. He is convinced that he is not cut out for a career in politics and refuses to sacrifice his true calling for his family’s ambition and expectations.
Hayden feels trapped by the promises he made in the past, but he can’t say no to his father.

After a drunken night, Hayden wakes up married to Saylor, one of the bridesmaids at his best friend wedding. She is quirky, lively and there is an instant attraction between them, although Hayden has forgotten everything about their night together. Their interactions were sweet and funny. Hayden can’t get Saylor out of his mind, even if they are virtual strangers.

Obviously, they don’t know each other well and can’t avoid misunderstandings. Both have conflicting feelings, questioning their decision to marry on a whim. But they have great chemistry and a common understanding of what they want in life.

Marquita Valentine has woven a story in a way that is fun, sweet and romantic. I loved that this story had a Romeo and Juliet vibe. Overall, this book was an easy, light and entertaining read, with likeable characters. This book is the fourth installment in the Take the Fall series, but it can be read as a standalone.

An advanced copy of this book was provided by the publisher, via NetGalley.

Excerpt:

“I’m trying to treat you differently.” I shake my head. “That’s not what I mean.”

“What do you mean?” She takes a step closer, the scent of her coconut sunscreen filling my senses.

“Look. I haven’t been in a relationship in a long time. Most of the women I meet either want to be with me because of the whole fireman aspect or they want to be with me because of who my father is.”

“I don’t care about either of those things, at least not when it comes to what I want from you,” she clarifies.

“I know that which is why I’m doing my level best to get to know you before I fuck you. And believe me, I will, just as soon as you—”

She drops the towel. Saylor drops the motherfucking towel and stands there, nothing on her luscious body.

“Whoops.”

My legs propel me forward, my hands go to her shoulders, pulling her to me until her cold skin hits mine. Her nipples scrape my chest, making me hard, making my board shorts so tight that I’ll probably have to rip them off.

She tips up her chin, all at once a siren and seductive. “As soon as I do what?”

I touch her face and she leans into me, rubbing against my hand as her lashes fall to her cheeks. “Say yes.”

Her eyes open. “Yes.”

She’s bold, she’s blunt, and she takes orders from no one. This is how she’s survived working in a man’s world. She’s the master of diversion, and her specialty is winning an election—no matter the cost.

That is, until she meets her new client, Democratic candidate, Congressman William Baxter. Kind, considerate, insanely handsome, honest, and ten years her junior, he’s a unicorn among politicians. He infuriates her. He challenges her. Most of all, he makes her see past the scandalous world of politics and helps her to discover the heart of the woman inside her.

With sparks flying between them and the election rapidly approaching, the last thing either of them need is to be caught in a compromising position. Some lines are meant to be crossed and some rules broken, but for Elizabeth and Liam is it worth the cost of being politically incorrect?

My Review

Rating : 3.5 out of 5 Stars

I’m a sucker for political romances, so reading this book was a no-brainer! As it happens, this was a great pick, with a strong heroine and a straightforward and honest hero, who is also a rising star in politics.

Elizabeth McNeal’s life is focused on what is important to her: her teenage daughter and her career. She is a renowned political strategist and prides herself on being the best at her job. In her mid-forties, she is still looking for Mr. Right, without much success.

She reluctantly accepts an offer to run the campaign of a young congressman, William, Liam, Baxter. She has doubts about him and considers him a rookie. Liam Baxter might be 34, but he is a shrewd and charismatic politician. Despite her initial objections, Elizabeth instantly trusts Liam. He is a man of conviction, honest and quick-witted. They are constantly arguing about everything, though, starting from his flashy ties. I loved their interactions, their easy banter. However, I found that the attraction between them was a bit too instant for my liking. A relationship between them could result in a huge scandal and hurt their careers. But they can’t stay away from one another and are obviously not good at keeping things under wraps. Are they ready to face the obstacles on their path to happiness?

Overall, this story was entertaining, with likeable characters and a well-developed plot. This book is a standalone, told in Elizabeth’s point of view. It was my first book by Jeanne McDonald, and it won’t be my last.

Excerpt

“You’ve been avoiding me all night, Elizabeth.”

My brain was on overload. His close proximity was killing my resolve. I pushed back against the very thing I wanted the most – to simply give into my desires. The pragmatic side of me took over, scratching and clawing to regain control.

“Congressman, if you haven’t noticed, I’ve been busy doing what you hired me to do.”

“I did hire you for a job. And I’ve been satisfied with you, until today.”

“I beg your pardon?” I gasped.

“I’ve just spent the last several hours selling you like you’re God himself. Not to mention all the hours I’ve invested in this campaign.”

“All of that’s true, and I thank you, but at this moment I don’t really care about the campaign.” He chuckled, taking a step forward, forcing my back against the lockers. I hit the metal with an oomph. My hands flattened against the cold steel. My eyes darted to the left and then to the right. This was bad. So bad. I began to freak over what our little standoff might look like to the media.

“Liam, we can’t do this here. What about the media?” I tried to push him back, but his large form wouldn’t budge.

“I don’t care,” he stated intensely.

“But I do. After tonight’s rally…” The corner of Liam’s mouth quirked upward. “Forget the rally or the media. Tell me why you’re avoiding me.”

He dipped his head, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. I withered at the feel of his tongue flicking my earlobe. All control was gone now. Kaput. Vanished. I was falling apart in his arms, which was the complete opposite of how he appeared to be.

Teeth grazed along my neck, a flick of his tongue followed. A small squeak and a heavy gasp expelled from me. My hands reached around his back, digging into the fabric of his jacket.

“Because I can’t resist you anymore.”

Damn him for being able to pull the truth out of me.

“Then don’t.”

Rating : 4 out of 5 Stars

This final book in Lauren Layne’s Wedding Belles series features the boss, Alexis Morgan, and her sexy British friend and accountant Logan Harris.

Since the start of the series, Logan Harris had been an intriguing character, and I definitely wanted to know more about him. One thing is for sure: he is very important in Alexis’ life. After a chance encounter in a bar, he made her dream come true. Alexis had a clear vision of what she wanted for her wedding planning company, but no money. Logan had enough money to fund her dream and was willing to become her silent business partner. Alexis and Logan are the perfect match, similar and yet so different. They are both charming control freaks and creatures of habit. But even if she is attracted to him, Alexis refuses to risk losing his friendship by complicating their relationship. She has the feeling that something is missing in her life, though.

As it happens, Logan had been obsessed with her for years and had been waiting for the right moment to seduce and claim her. But he is running out of time, now that he has to make the difficult choice between staying in New York or going back home to take over his family’s company. I loved that he is not one to give up easily. So far, he had accepted everything coming from Alexis, but the time had come to show her his inner caveman, hoping she would fall hard for him! Logan was such a great character, sexy, charming and swoon-worthy. Alexis was a drama queen at times and he was always so patient and understanding, my heart broke for him. If only Alexis could take a risk and give him the happily ever after he has desperately been waiting for.

With this final installment, Lauren Layne has delivered a light and entertaining conclusion to her fantastic series. Although Alexis is probably my least favorite Wedding Belle, I definitely fell for Logan’s charm and easygoing personality. And, of course, I loved the great cast of supporting characters. As the series progressed, the Wedding Belles and their partners have become a group of close friends. It was great to catch up on Brooke and Seth, Heather and Josh. This series has definitely been a winner and I can’t recommend it enough!

“Hello.”

The sexy British accented startled Alexis out of her thoughts, and she glanced up, both alarmed and intrigued to find that the face that awaited her was every bit as appealing as the voice.

The man was about her age—early, maybe midtwenties—and ridiculously cute. His hair was dark and maybe just a touch too long, as though he intended to get a haircut but kept forgetting. The eyes were brown and friendly, accented by trendy black-framed glasses.

The chunky cable-knit sweater with elbow patches—for real—bordered on dorky, but then, Alexis had always had a soft spot for dorky. He had a bit of the Clark Kent thing going on, which had always been far more her type than the overrated Superman.

“Hi,” she replied quickly, realizing that she’d been staring.

His smile grew wider as he extended a hand. “Logan Harris.”

Darn. Even the name was good.

“Alexis,” she said.

“Does that come with a last name?” he teased, lowering himself to the vacant barstool beside her.

“Not to strange men,” she retorted.

“I could buy you a drink. Get rid of the ‘strange’ part.”

Alexis’s smile slipped as she remembered that romance, even flirting, wasn’t part of her plan. She’d learned the hard way that she could have one or the other—her own business or a boyfriend—not both. And even if she wanted the latter, the latter didn’t want her back.

“No thanks; I’m fine,” she said, letting the slightest amount of chill enter her voice. The ice-princess treatment, Roxanne called it.

Logan shrugged, undeterred. “All right then. May I borrow your menu?”

She nodded, and he picked it up, perusing it for several moments and paying her no attention.

It was both a relief and also a bit of an insult, if she was being entirely honest, to be given up on so easily.

Alexis tried to turn her attention back to her laptop but watched out of the corner of her eye as he finally shut the menu, waiting patiently to catch the bartender’s eye.

“Hi there,” he said, when the bartender ambled back over. “I’d like a Stella, and a maybe bite to eat?”

Alexis didn’t miss the once-over that the bartender gave Logan before the curvy redhead leaned over the bar, displaying perky boobs as she clicked her pen and pulled a notepad out of her back pocket.

“Shoot,” the bartender said flirtatiously, looking a good deal friendlier than she had when she’d spoken to Alexis.

Not that Alexis blamed her. A cute Brit could do that to a girl.

“All right then,” Logan said. “I’d like the burger, medium, with Swiss. Fish and chips, extra tartar, and . . . how’s your chicken club?”

The bartender blinked. “It’s good. But you want all that?”

“I do. Thank you.”

“Suit yourself,” she said, scribbling Logan’s order on the pad.

“Hungry?” Alexis couldn’t resist asking after the bartender moved away.

Logan gave a sheepish smile. “I’m a recovering student. I sometimes get so wrapped up in my day that I forget to eat.”

“A recovering student. What does that mean?”

He turned slightly toward her. “Someone’s showing plenty of interest in a strange man.”

She bit her lip. “I’m sorry if I was rude before. I’m just not really in the market for . . . you know.”

He gave her an easy smile. “Everyone’s in the market for a friend, Alexis.”

She opened her mouth and then shut it as she realized he was right. She could use a friend. She’d spent her entire life in Boston and knew almost nobody in New York. This guy seemed nice and nonthreatening enough—what would be the harm in a little conversation over dinner? It had been too long since she’d had somebody to share a meal with.

Logan seemed to know the moment she capitulated, because he turned more fully toward her. “A recovering student, Alexis, is a recent graduate. One who hasn’t quite absorbed that there will be no more finals, no more requisite all-nighters, and no more dorm sex.”

Alexis laughed. “Undergrad, then?”

He gave her a wry look. “How young do I look, darling? MBA from Columbia. Just finished up end of last year.”

She felt a little stab of relief that he wasn’t twenty-two.

He leaned toward her slightly. “Twenty-five next month, just in case you were wondering. As a friend.”

She tried to hide her smile and failed. “Columbia, huh? You’re a long way from home.”

“Noticed that, did ya?” He winked. “I came out here for undergrad, also Columbia. Always figured I’d go back to London and maybe someday I will, but . . .” He shrugged. “Seems I have stuff to do here first.”

“Such as?” She took a sip of her wine, dismayed to see that it was half-empty.

“Well, this will probably shock you, given my vast amount of brawn, but I’m an accountant. Or at least I will be, once I get my business up and running.”

Alexis was impressed. “Your own business?”

Most twentysomethings, even those with an entrepreneurial bent, opted to get a few years of work under their belts for someone else before branching out on their own.

He nodded. “I’m working out of my flat for now, but I’m hoping to lease some office space soon, get some legitimacy. If nothing else to get my father off my back.”

“He’s not a fan of your plan?” Alexis asked.

Logan’s shoulder lifted, and for the first time he seemed a little sad. “Both parents have had it in their head that I’d come home. Run the family business in London.”

“Which is . . . ?”

He spun his beer glass idly. “Financial consulting firm. My father’s the CEO, Mum’s the COO.”

“Wow, that’s . . .”

“Scary?” Logan supplied.

“I was going to say impressive. That they work together—without killing each other, I mean.”

“They’re in love. It’s atrocious,” he said with a wink. “What about your folks?”

Alexis laughed. “Not in love. They divorced when I was in high school. Dad’s remarried and happy now, I think. Mom not so much.”

“And you?” he said. “Are you happy, Alexis?”

She pursed her lips, surprised and yet not entirely unsettled by the personal question. “It’s been a while since anyone asked me that. Since I even thought about it, really.”

“Think it out. I’ll wait,” he said with a wink.

She didn’t have to think that long. “I’m almost happy.”

“You sound quite confident on that.”

She shrugged. “Let’s just say that I need a few things to fall into place in my professional life, but once that happens . . . yeah. I’ll be happy.”

She’d make sure of it.

PROLOGUE

CALEB

My father always said I would know when the right woman came along. He was such a wise man. When it happened, I didn’t even question it because the process was so effortless. I just fell into her . . . because my heart knew her right away.

Knew she was the one for me.

I’d known her for years actually. She came to Blackstone Island to live with her grandmother after her parents were killed in a car crash. A devastated fifteen-year-old trying to adapt to a new life in a new place, trying to find where she fit in to a world so different from where she’d come—a forty-square-mile resort island off the Massachusetts coast where her grandmother ran the household at Blackwater, the family ancestral home.

Should have known of her, that is.

Our paths didn’t cross that I am aware of, but it’s possible. I rarely visited the island in those days because I was a twenty-three-year-old junior executive fresh out of Harvard Business School, learning everything I could about the family business. I traveled the world, enjoying the excitement of international boardroom deals by day and socializing at off-hours business affairs by night. I worked hard at both. Affairs, liaisons, one-night stands had all come and gone without a backward glance. Nameless faces and unremarkable encounters filled my nights whenever I wanted them to. The hopping nightlife of the big cities with even bigger players vying for a piece of the pie became my normal. I embraced every aspect that came with the lifestyle. Wealth, sexual favors, a certain celebrity born out of my name, all collected with barely any effort. For the next eight years, I had the world in the palm of my hand as I went about amassing a personal fortune in addition to increasing the family coffers.

Or so I thought.

I didn’t yet know what was missing from my life. Until her. And then, when I realized exactly who she was, and how fate had gotten the last laugh on me, it was already far too late. She’d bewitched me utterly. And furthermore, I knew she had no idea who I was or what ties connected us.

Maybe that’s what made her so intoxicating?

I didn’t know and I didn’t care because it made absolutely no difference to me. I wanted her with a primal desire I could barely understand, yet I embraced that desire wholeheartedly because I was incapable of doing anything else with it. How could I not? She had enchanted me.

However, once my brain managed to catch up, it wasn’t quite so effortless to accept this new and unfamiliar reality of feeling something for a woman beyond the unquestioning curiosity of when and if we might fuck.

I struggled against the idea of her at first for a few reasons. She was too young. My mother would never approve of us together. Others in my world would probably chew her up and spit her out, destroying her sweetness. But I soon found out my heart didn’t give a flying fuck about any of those reasons. The heart wants what it wants, and I’d discovered that for my heart, “want” was all wrapped up in the package that was Brooke Ellen Casterley.

The death of my father from the evils of cancer was an eye-opener for my siblings and me. Money can buy a lot of things, but it can’t stop the grim reaper from calling on you if it’s your time to go. Death was called the great equalizer. And it truly was. Wealth is a trivial thing when it’s only extra fuckin’ zeros on a balance sheet that makes any difference between lives lived. Doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor when you die, because none of it counts at the end. You leave this life the same way you come into it. You go out alone and take nothing. “There has to be more to life than making money, son,” he told me at the end. He took hold of my hand and squeezed as hard as his frail strength could manage so as to make me understand the importance. He had regrets and wanted to share with me what he’d learned to prevent me from making the same mistakes. I understood him clearly.

The most essential value my father tried to teach me along with my brothers and sisters was the idea of family. Family took precedence over money. “Take care of the family first and the wealth will grow, Caleb,” he said.

A strong family moving forward was the only thing that truly meant anything at the end of the day.

The Blackstones had been here on the island since the days when the Mayflower made its treacherous journey to the untamed American shores. As the eldest son it was my duty to make sure the Blackstones would still be here a hundred years from now.

My plan to fulfill my duty included her. It wouldn’t work any other way for me. I knew it the first time I ever felt the heat of her eyes as they burned me from across the room.

I knew it down in my bones.

I was going to marry that lovely, beautiful girl from England, and she would be mine.
