. . .In the game of love…
Georgiana Lucas despises the arrogant and cruel Marquess of Westmorland even before learning that he’s won the deed to her friend Kitty’s home in a card game. Still, Georgiana assures Kitty the marquess wouldn’t possibly come all the way to Derbyshire to throw them out—until he shows up, bloody and unconscious. Fearing that Kitty would rather see him die, Georgiana blurts out that he’s her fiancé. She’ll nurse the hateful man back to health and make him vow to leave and never return. The man who wakes up, though, is nothing like the heartless rogue Georgiana thought she knew…
You have to risk it all
He wakes up with no memory of being assaulted—or of who he is. The bewitching beauty tending him so devotedly calls him Rob and claims she’s his fiancée even as she avoids his touch. Though he can’t remember how he won her hand, he’s now determined to win her heart. But as his memory returns and the truth is revealed, Rob must decide if the game is up—or if he’ll take a chance on a love that defies all odds.

My Review
Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
This story was wonderful, with superb character building, well written prose and a fascinating romance that builds up gradually. There were a lot of sweet moments between the main characters. While I’m never overly fond of the amnesia plot, I found that it really worked in this instance.
Robert Churchill-Gray, the Marquess of Westmorland, is a notorious rogue, heir to a dukedom and a very eligible bachelor. Attacked by highwaymen, he is beaten nearly to death and found by Lady Georgiana Lucas, who nurses him back to health, despite her hostility to him. Robert won the deed to her friends’ family home and she hates his reckless personality. The torment he endures because he suffers from amnesia gives him a vulnerability which is very touching.
I found Robert’s physical and emotional reactions to his amnesia believable. Also, this character was much more likeable after he lost his memory, he was no longer so disregarding of those around him that were not in his circle of friends. He is a man of contradictions and I loved him, despite his past faults. The memory loss allows him a fresh start. So the rest of the book is about the relationship that is slowly developing between Georgiana and Robert, and the slow return of his memory. But what happens when he remembers how things really were and who he really is?
Despite her lies, Georgiana was so lovely. Considerate, smart and determined. She has believed it necessary to lie for the sake of a man she previously disliked, keeping her stories straight and fighting off her growing attraction to him. Of course, her lie is getting out of hand, but I could forgive her. She wanted to save and protect him while he was utterly vulnerable. Robert stirs in her the longing for a life she never knew she craved until he came along.
Georgiana and Robert are unlikely partners. Their journey to happiness is sweet, poignant and suspenseful as they struggle to overcome the obstacles that lie in their path. Both strong and determined people, they are clearly made for each other, and I enjoyed seeing them find their happy ending. This book is the third installment in the Wagers of Sin series, but it can be read as a standalone.
Many thanks to the author for my advanced copy of this book.
Excerpt
Something inside her seemed to swell and ache for more, as if she’d just been jolted to life from a deep stupor. Her heart beat like a bird’s wing against her ribs. His tongue teased hers, and a shiver of surrender went down her spine as she opened for him. This was what she had feared and craved, all at once, and she never wanted it to end.
He tore his mouth from hers and clutched her to him so tightly she felt his ragged breath vibrate through her. “Don’t go,” he whispered urgently. “Please don’t leave.” He kissed her again, and she almost swooned into it. No, she wanted to say; I don’t want to leave you. She pushed her fingers into his hair and held on, pulling him closer and kissing him back with every fiber of her being.
“Georgiana,” he breathed, his arms trembling around her. “Come with me . . .”
