My Review

Rating : 3.5 out of 5 Stars

Until You is a lovely story about finding true love at the most unexpected time and place. The pre-wedding setting was charming, and I loved the characters, even if I just wanted to knock some sense into them at times! The heroes, Tyler Norris and Lanie Rogers, are perfect strangers and temporary partners: Tyler is a groomsman and Lanie is a bridesmaid in the same wedding.

Tyler is a self-proclaimed life-long bachelor and hates weddings. And yet he couldn’t refuse to attend the multiple rehearsals and photo shoots in preparation for his friend Randy’s marriage with Lanie’s cousin Britt. Despite his professional success and his image as a tenacious attorney, Tyler is insecure and vulnerable. He feels incapable of loving, but has decided to take a break from his womanizing ways.

Lanie is conflicted, confused and finds herself standing at a major crossroad in her life. She has lived a nomadic life, because of her job, and was too busy to get involved with someone. She is a workaholic, but feels stuck in a job with no progression or fullfilment. She wants to reconsider her priorities and is ready for a change in her career and her way of life.

Tyler and Lanie’s attraction is instant, their relationship is a whirlwind. They are both non-committal and neither one of them has any expectations in what should be a short-term arrangement, a fling that they want to keep secret. But their life is turned upside-down, they can’t stay away from each other. Their intense chemistry was palpable.

The characters were well-portrayed and relatable, but I would have enjoyed more plot development. The pre-wedding setting was nice, and yet a bit too repetitive in my opinion. I felt that Lanie and Tyler’s romantic relationship could be more developed, it seemed that Lanie’s career problems took center stage at times. Tyler definitely grew on me, I loved the way he was able to rekindle his relationship with his younger brothers and mend broken family ties. Not to mention that his final grand romantic gesture definitely won me over! I enjoyed the author’s strong and fluid writing style, it was my first read by her. I’ll definitely check out her previous books. Overall, Until You is a light, sweet and sexy contemporary romance and a great summer read.

My Review

Rating : 4.5 out of 5 stars

In her endearing style, Helena Hunting has delivered a cast of quirky characters and a fun and light plot in a feel good romance that I didn’t want to end. This book had me smiling, giggling and sighing! The heroine, Ruby, comes from money but she refuses to be a rich man’s arm candy. She wants to prove to herself and to her father that she can survive on her own, even if she is a struggling artist. Her father wants her to fail and threatens to cut her off. He has stopped paying the rent of her flat and she will be homeless soon.

To make matters worse, she is kissed by a germ infested stranger, who passes flu on to her. Her ensuing audition to perform in an Off-Broadway show is a disaster. Because of Bancroft, aka Bane, Mills, she is jobless in addition to being homeless. Bane and Ruby move in the same circles, they both come from old money. Bane has made a name for himself in professional rugby but an injury has ended his career. He has decided the time was right to immerse himself in his family’s hotel business. But that means travelling extensively, and he needs someone to house sit and take care of his pets, Francesca and Tiny, during his absence. They are the most unlikely animal companions, especially Tiny, but they bring a lot of sweetness to the story! I’m not saying more!

Bane needs a house and pet sitter and Ruby needs a place to stay. A perfect match! Bane is an endearing character, he is sweet and considerate. He finds Ruby refreshing, she isn’t a pampered and manicured socialite. Their long-distance phone flirting was delightful, they slowly forge an emotional connection. As a famous rugby player, Bane was always on the road and he wants to finally put down some roots. Ruby is independent and a future of kept woman is not what she wants out of life. Her career choice is not approved in her social sphere, but Bane always has her back. She is not immune to his charms, despite her best efforts!

Shacking Up is a charming, fun and feel good story, celebrating determination, friendship and love. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this irresistible romantic comedy and recommend it as a perfect summer read.

This battle of opposites was an entertaining read! Coleman, Cole, Grant is everything Olivia Ramsey despises. As a convinced environmental activist, she is a staunch opponent to ruthless businessmen’s approach to environmental matters. Cole is an influential and arrogant business tycoon and also happens to be her main target. She has made a habit of harassing him during his morning coffee run, to convince him of the validity of her cause in defense of endangered species. I loved her tenacity and determination to pester him! She is convinced that Cole will eventually give in to her demands.

Cole has a lot on his plate. He has to marry before his thirtieth birthday or the control over the Grant estate will revert to his scheming grandmother. A marriage of convenience would save him from ruin and could be a profitable business transaction, with billions at stake. He is convinced that Olivia would be the best person to fool his grandmother. In exchange, he is willing to back her conservation project. His grandmother is not a sweet old lady, though, but a shrewd and manipulative snake.

Olivia and Cole are the best allies and they respect each other’s opinion, even if they don’t always agree. I loved their banter, the warm and cozy interactions. They have forged an emotional connection and lines are blurred. The marriage for show might become a reality. Olivia is compassionate and her passion for life is contagious, but she always remains true to her convictions.

This book combines two favorite tropes of mine: enemies to lovers and the marriage of convenience. This was a great recipe for a fun and sexy read. Granted, the plot is nothing new, but the characters are easy to love and engaging!

Found Underneath is the second part of Shaw Mercer and Willow Blackwell’s story.  Shaw is born into privilege and is one of Seattle’s most eligible bachelors. As the son of Seattle’s mayor, conformity is of the utmost importance to help his father get reelected for a second term. Willow is an escort and accepts to play the part of his girlfriend for a few months, against a substantial sum. As it happens, their business arrangement has turned out to be far more than they initially thought.

Shaw and Willow’s connection is undeniable, but one night has intersected the future of their respective families in a tragic way. Shaw’s younger sister, Annabelle, seems to be the key to the mystery of that tragic night. Even if Shaw doesn’t show his emotions and seems non-committal, he knows what he wants and he is ready to fight for Willow. She has been going through a lot of hardship and she deserves a chance at happiness. Shaw accepts her for who she is, obstinate and broken. This character had depth, and accepts his vulnerabilities. His past as a famous womanizer is behind him.

This emotional, compelling read kept me hooked till the last page. The climax was full of heartbreak, passion and emotion. One thing is for sure, K.L. Kreig knows how to write a super sexy alpha and this book brought out all the feels.  I loved the characters, their smoldering romance and abundance of chemistry. I was totally invested in their story and so happy to see them walk into the sunset!

Forbidden Promises combines passion with intrigue and danger in a fast paced and entertaining story set in the Irish mob underworld. The addictive plot captivated me and I read this book almost in one sitting! It is well-written with great characterization and a perfect pace. The story starts off like a small town romance.

The heroine, Sloan O’Malley, has chosen to leave her pampered life of Mafia princess behind. Against her father’s wishes, she wants the freedom to make her own choices and has escaped her Boston mob family with the help of one of her brothers. She has relocated to a small town on the West Coast, and has started a new life, working at a local diner and trying to remain under the radar.

She is intrigued by her surly neighbor, Jude MacNamara. He is mysterious, overbearing, high handed, and yet Sloan is attracted to him. As it happens, Jude is the last surviving member of a rival mob family. He is a lone wolf, dangerous and cold, who falls for sweet and sassy Sloan. Their chemistry sets the pages on fire! Jude is not a protector, but rather a hit man with a hidden agenda. He has no idea how much his life will change after meeting Sloan, though. He is close to seeing his endgame realized, but he could lose her in the process, and it changes everything. He doesn’t want her to be a casualty in the war he has started to avenge his family. He knows they won’t be allowed to ride off in the sunset, their future is uncertain, but he is prepared to fight for Sloan and deal with mob politics.

The characters were the strength of this book for me. I loved how they both grew as the story unfolded. Not to mention that there was enough action and drama to keep me invested in this gripping mafia romance! The author surprised me at some point, mainly because I expected the story to progress in a different way, and I really liked that. Forbidden Promises is the fourth installment in the O’Malley series, but it can be read as a standalone. I will read the other books in the series, to know more about the intriguing O’Malley siblings. I’m definitely hooked!

There was no logical reason for her to trust him, but he’d been careful with her up to this point. Perhaps he’d be careful with her with what came next. She nodded mutely, watching as he rolled on a condom that he’d retrieved from his pocket. Her body hummed in anticipation and trepidation, but she didn’t let it show as he moved back to join her on the bed.

Jude palmed her between her legs, his big fingers exploring her. It didn’t seem possible that he could spark pleasure with a few specific touches, but it didn’t take much to have her relaxing, letting him once again take the lead. He kissed her neck. “Feels good, huh?”

“Well, I—oh.” Her eyes went wide when he pushed a second finger into her. It stretched her, the feeling not entirely pleasant at first, but he merely waited, pulsing the slightest bit, until pleasure took hold once more. She clutched his shoulders. “Kiss me again. Please.”

“You don’t have to ask twice.” He took her mouth like he owned it—like he owned every part of her. Jude slid between her legs, his body rubbing deliciously against hers. His hard length slid through her wetness, creating a friction that sparked a tide of desire deep inside her. Again? I couldn’t possibly…

He nipped her bottom lip and then soothed the slight ache with his tongue. “Ready?”

Hold Me was like a little treat, delightful, emotional and sweet! I savored every word of this novella! It can be seen as an extended epilogue of Anchor Me, the fourth full-length installment in the Stark series. So, obviously, it is best to read Anchor Me before starting this book.

We get a few glimpses into Nikki and Damien Stark family life and I loved the cute moments with their daughters! We see Nikki trying to juggle the demands of a career and motherhood. Despite her feelings of guilt, she is passionate about her business. She has worked hard to build it on her own, with the help of Damien’s business expertise. She needs time to make some choices and find the right balance between her professional aspirations and her family.

Damien’s tenderness and perceptiveness tugged at my heartstrings. He is supportive, intuitive and empathic. He takes care of his family. Nikki and Damien’s chemistry is as intense as ever, their soulmate connection is truly emotional. I love these characters, and I hope that Julie Kenner will revisit them again and again! This novella is a great addition to their story, with a perfect combination of sexiness and sweetness!

Excerpt

I already know that Damien is running later than I am, because he’d called while I was stuck in traffic. Now I dismiss Bree for the night, then go peek in on both my girls. I want to wake them, to cuddle them close, but I let them sleep, contenting myself with watching the steady rise and fall of their little chests.

Then I take a quick shower, change into yoga pants and a T-shirt, and stretch out on our lovely iron bed, surrounded by paperwork.

That’s where I am when Damien finds me—although I’m asleep instead of busily working.

“Hey,” he says, brushing a kiss on my shoulder. “Long day?”

As I claw my way back to consciousness, he gathers my papers and sets them on the bedside table. There’s a glass of wine, too, and he hands it to me. I try to avoid alcohol since I’m breastfeeding, but I also did the research and know that a little bit isn’t a problem so long as I wait to pump or feed Anne.

“The longest,” I say, then take a grateful sip. I lean sideways against him, my back supported by the pile of pillows that rest against the wall. I give him the full rundown, the highlight of which is Eric’s surprising departure.

“You can handle continued growth,” he says, his loyalty giving me a nice warm boost of confidence. “But you’re also well-positioned to simply hold the line if that’s what you want to do. Even to downsize if it works out that way.”

I push away from him, frowning as my chest tightens uncomfortably. “What?”

“I’m just saying that you don’t have to go back to work full-throttle.”

I sit up straight. “Excuse me? Why? Because you can support us?”

“I can support us. But what I’m—”

“So I’m supposed to feel guilty about wanting to work just because you bring in billions?” Dammit, he knows how important my job is to me. How hard I’ve worked to build my business on my own, not relying on money that comes from Stark International.

He stares at me like someone might stare at a wild hyena. “That’s not what I’m saying at all.”

Up until this point, Sloan O’Malley has been kind of lost in a sea of the strong personalities in her family. She’s the quiet one. The wallflower. The obedient one. All her hard-won calm disappeared when she saw Jude lounging in the corner booth. Lounging wasn’t the right word. He looked like a big cat who was as likely to tear out her throat as purr and rub against her.

She tried and failed to shut the thought down. From there, it was a slippery slope to thinking about what she’d done last night while picturing him.

It was almost enough to make her flee into the kitchen again. Or it would have been if not for the knowledge that Marge had given her a chance, and the woman wouldn’t take kindly to her hiding in the back when there were customers to be served.

Sloan took a careful breath and approached Jude. “What can I get you?”

“I feel like I’m perpetually apologizing to you, but I left abruptly last night and I’m sorry.” He didn’t wait for her to respond. “Come out with me after your shift.”

She blinked. Did he just…“I’m sorry, what?”

“I’m going to take you out. Tonight.” His intense dark eyes never wavered, though she was wondering how she ever labeled them cold. Right now, they were so hot, they were liable to turn her into a pillar of flame.

The only question was if she’d perish in the fire or emerge as something altogether different.

That thought should have scared her, but she’d been afraid for so long. Maybe it was time to do more than think about taking the first step into the future. Maybe she needed to actually put herself into motion. Sloan licked her lips, aware of the way he tracked the move. Everything about Jude was intense. He’d toned it down for her last night, but he wasn’t even trying right now. She shifted her stance, still torn. “I’m not exactly in a good place to date right now.”

He considered her, and she suddenly got the impression that he was choosing his words with care so as not to spook her. “What is it, exactly, that you think I’m asking?”

“I, ah…” She clutched her little notebook to her chest, painfully aware that the handful of diners in the place were blatantly eavesdropping. “I don’t know.”

He lowered his voice to the point where she had to inch closer to hear him clearly. “Let me show you.”

And, suddenly, she wanted to do exactly that. Sloan found herself nodding even though every instinct she had said that Jude was trouble in the worst way. But, whatever he was, he was vitally different from her brothers and father back home. He might seem brutal and dangerous and intense to a criminal degree, but this wasn’t Boston. This was Callaway Rock. No matter how dangerous he seemed, odds were that he wasn’t a man who had skeletons in his closet—literal or otherwise.

That made him safe in a way none of the men she’d ever known were.

Jude’s gaze sharpened. “That’s a yes.”
