This book is a sweet and smart contemporary romance read. Laurelin Paige’s take on love is honest and real, the journey of a relationship blossoming from a fake one to a real one was realistic. The author has written a charming yet flawed hero in Weston. Due to Donovan’s meddling, he is put in an awkward position with Elizabeth. She is the sole inheritor of an advertising empire, and their union would take Donovan and Weston’s business to the next level and help Elizabeth regain control of her family’s company.

Elizabeth is a great heroine, she is smart, relatable and not one to back down from a challenge. As it happens, she is Weston’s type. They want their relationship to look genuine and legitimate but it doesn’t take much effort, they have undeniable chemistry. There are a few bumps in the story that create some drama, increasing the tension between Elizabeth and Weston. Their bickering was really cute, their mutual feelings are complicated but real and all-consuming. The author has us rooting for these two people to grow as individuals as well as in their own relationship.

This book is a sequel to the Dirty Duet and can be read as a standalone. I didn’t like Sabrina in this story, frankly I didn’t recognize her and that was a bit of a surprise. This story is just the beginning and ends on a painful cliffhanger. I can’t wait for more!

I looked at the windows past him, trying to distract myself. Lights flashed and swirled around the dance floor in time to the beat, the only part of the music which made it into the sanctuary of the bubble room. I could tell it was crowded, but I couldn’t make out faces the way they could probably make out ours. “I don’t know if anyone’s looking,” I said.

“Don’t worry about them. Just focus on what you’re doing.”

Easy for him to say. He wasn’t facing them. He was only looking at me.

Nope. I couldn’t think about that either. Just had to focus on the task at hand.

I closed my eyes. “So just pretend that I… That we are… That under my dress…” I couldn’t even say it.

Weston leaned forward and murmured near my ear. “Yes, pretend that under your dress you are not wearing any panties. I have my dick out. I’m working you, and you are showing me exactly how you like it. Now go.”

Just like that, my panties were damp.

I didn’t know if he was saying those things to loosen me up or to get a rise out of me, either was possible.

Whatever his intent, it did the trick. He set the scene. I felt my face flush like the women in the videos as I imagined him rubbing his crown against my slit before nudging his tip inside and then burying himself to the hilt.

I opened my mouth in a silent gasp, acting out how I was sure it would feel. Good. It would feel so good.

This was so…weird. So hot and sexy and arousing and weird.

I wondered if he was feeling it too, feeling turned on, or if it was just me. It wasn’t like I could ask though, and knowing probably wouldn’t help my performance anyway.

So I concentrated on me. Focused on the task.

“Do I move or something?” I bucked my hips forward and felt the friction against my crotch as it rubbed the fly of his pants.

Mmm.

“Yeah,” he said breathlessly. “That’s good. That motion. Just like that.”

“Okay. Okay.” I rocked against him again, and again, my hips tilting back and forth, my clit brushing against his fly. Every time, stroking and kindling a fire in a fireplace I hadn’t had cleaned for some time. I spread my thighs a little wider and braced my knees against the bench so I could swing my pelvis all the way forward, in and out, in and…

Oh.

I froze. “Is that—?” But I didn’t have to ask. There was most definitely a fat, thick ridge pressed against the crotch panel of my panties. I guess that answered the question of whether he was feeling it too.

My eyes flew open. “Oh my God!”

“Look,” he said, ready to defend himself. “There’s an extremely attractive woman sitting on my lap. I cannot help what happens to my cock. It has a mind of its own.”

My Review

From the first chapters, I fell in love with the story. Paola Dangelico sure knows how to write a riveting and beautiful story. Tie Breaker was not an easy romance, Maren and Noah have history and a lot of it is volatile, but they also can’t deny the unbreakable pull between them. They are well-developed overall, and their emotions are easy to understand. Their growth from naive children to mature adults will pull you deeper into their world. You could feel the connection between them every step of the way to their happy ending.

Maren Murphy temporarily leaves behind her trainer and boyfriend and her world’s top tennis player life to fulfill her grandfather’s last wishes with the help of Noah Callahan, his business partner. Her homecoming is bittersweet, she was betrayed by Noah, her childhood friend and the man she thought would be her future. Their soulmate connection has grown into an adversary relationship and Maren resents him for hurting her deeply.

Noah, with all his faults and really bad decisions, he’s just so sweet, tender and caring, both as a boy and as a grown man. He has lived with the burden of his mistakes but frankly his emotional pain is self-inflicted. It takes great emotional strength for him to break through the barriers that Maren has placed on her heart and convince her that he is truly the man for her. Life has handed him an opportunity to fix things between them. Maren is someone who he doesn’t think he deserves, but someone that he knows he can’t live without.

Maren is a fighter, regrets and anger have fueled her drive to win on the tennis courts. She has never been able to let go of the past and her personal life has been in limbo for many years.

This book was a journey of personal growth, acceptance and forgiveness, with a good amount of angst. To be honest, I couldn’t help questioning the ease with which Maren puts aside her boyfriend. Overall, this is a romance that entertained me. That being said, I did struggle with some of the characters’ decisions. As with all books by Paola Dangelico, the writing and storytelling are fantastic and I can’t wait to see what she has in store next!

My Review

 Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dark, gritty, steamy, intense… I could go on with several adjectives describing this sequel to The Mafia and his Angel. I had a hard time putting this one down. In the dangerous and cruel underworld of the Russian mob, there are enemies, friends and enemies masquerading as friends. Violence, betrayal, revenge and power-struggle wars are the name of the game. I enjoyed very much how this story played out with a few good twists.

These characters are people you would never root for, they are ruthless killers, they are the ones you should hope to see fall. But in this book, they are the heroes and you desperately want them to succeed and be able to protect the family. There is plenty of action and suspense and you never know what is going to happen next.

This story is a new episode in the Tainted Hearts series, we are getting the opportunity to learn more about Viktor, Alessio’s second in command and best friend. Viktor is playing a dangerous game of chess to protect his mob family, his role of double agent has taken a toll on him. He’s cold, controlling and calculating. And yet, we get to see a very different side of this character.

Valerie’s story is very sad. This character is resilient and loyal to her family,  she has made huge sacrifices to protect them. What I loved most about her is her determination. I enjoyed how Valerie and Viktor’s secret relationship progressed. It builds slowly, we see their attraction for one another and we see their hesitation to pursue it further. Their chemistry was off the charts and the sexy times, every hidden moment they were together, were hot as hell.

The story was entertaining and fast paced. It had the right balance of romance, steamy scenes and suspense, and kept me on my toes. The ending left many things open and I definitely want more!

My Review

Rating : 4 out of 5 Stars

I love this series and was looking forward to this latest installment. Maddox is a complex, intense character. I loved his take charge attitude. Not to mention that he’s proven to be a loyal and fierce friend to Bentley and Aiden.

Getting inside his head made it much easier to understand him. He is confident, controlling, protective and incredibly romantic. He hates unpredictability and controls his business and emotions tightly. He’s feeling adrift now that both Bentley and Aiden have found their partner in life.

He is irresistibly drawn to Dee, Cami’s sister, she is smart, witty and driven. They have a lot in common. Maddox and Dee are both fun characters to get to know and the chemistry between them was blazing hot! I loved how honest they were with one another and how they really did communicate immediately. They just worked together. Dee has a vast capacity for love and an ability to give Maddox what he needs, once she has accepted the reality of their love.

Maddox’s willingness to put everything on the line for Dee was amazing, his vulnerability was heartbreaking. He has a troubled, traumatic past that he hopes never catches up to him.

Melanie Moreland did a great job of tying things from the first two books in with this story. I also loved how I got to see Maddox and Dee’s interactions with the other two couples. I did not know what to expect coming into this story but I really liked the characters a lot.

Until one day, I was browsing my local bookstore for something new to read.

Studying a book jacket, I was distracted when a woman’s silhouette caught my attention. She was lissome and pretty, the sunlight catching her light red hair. She was reading the back of a book, her finger running over the spine. Something about her beckoned to me yet seemed familiar. With a grin, I realized it was Dee, and I approached her. “Find something good?”

She glanced at me, startled. I was close enough to see the flecks of brown in her wide green eyes. She smiled and slid the book back onto the shelf. “Not really.” She indicated the books I had in my hand. “I think you’ve had better luck.”

“You can borrow one if you like. I tend to buy in batches.”

She tilted her head, silently mouthing the titles. She looked up with a smile. “That would be lovely.”

“I was gonna grab a cup of coffee. Can I interest you in joining me?”

“I’d love to.”

Seated across from her, I realized it was the first time we’d ever been alone.

“You come here often?”

She shook her head with a wry grin. “Is that your best pick-up line, Maddox?”

I chuckled. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in here until today.”

“I was in the office for a short while, then dropped in here. Usually I browse on my lunch hour.”

“That makes sense.”

Silence fell as we sipped our coffee, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. I noticed she nibbled at the end of her thumb, and it struck me as odd. Given her stoic persona, I found it rather endearing.

And I found my thoughts strange. Endearing wasn’t a word I used often—if ever.

She met my gaze. “So, is it?”

“Is it what?”

“Is that your best pick-up line?”

I studied her as I drank my coffee. “I don’t typically do pick-up lines.”

She smirked. “I’m not surprised.”

“Sorry?”

“With that whole silver fox thing you’ve got going, I’m sure you don’t have to.”

I frowned. “Silver fox?”

“Maddox, the silver fox. Young, sexy, wealthy, plus that premature gray? I bet you beat them off with a stick.”

I shook my head, amused at her thoughts. “I’m sorry to disappoint, but no.”

“Really? I’m surprised.”

I sat back, crossing my legs, swinging one foot. “What about you, Deirdre? All prim and pretty. You drive the lawyers crazy at your firm?”

She laughed. “Dee. No one calls me Deirdre. It’s stuffy and formal.”

“No. It’s a lovely name for a lovely woman. It suits you. The lawyers you date don’t call you by your full name?”

She ignored my comment about her name. “I don’t date lawyers, or anyone else at my firm,” she stated firmly. “In fact, I don’t date.”

“Ever?”

She hesitated, then shook her head. “No. Love, romantic love, isn’t for me.”

I took in a deep breath and spoke. “Why is that?”

“It’s dangerous. It overwhelms and kills you.”

At my raised eyebrow, she continued.

“I’m not saying I don’t see people. I have…needs. But I don’t do romantic relationships. I’ve seen the way love destroys people.” She held up her hand before I could speak. “I know it works for some, but I’m not built that way.”

I drained my coffee, then leaned forward. “Neither am I.”

She widened her eyes. “Really?”

“Love equals power. The power to destroy. The ability to hurt and cause pain. The chaos it causes. That’s what love means to me. It destroys trust and leaves you weak.”

“You feel that way about everyone?”

“There are a few exceptions. And I will never break them for a woman.”

Our eyes met, silent understanding passing between us. The air shifted, and I felt our mutual desire grow. It stretched out, pushing tentatively against the boundaries we had erected. She propped her elbow on the table, lifting her thumb to her mouth. Her small teeth gnawed at the flesh. It was an innocent gesture, yet I found it provocative.

“I have needs too,” I murmured. Reaching over, I tugged her thumb from her mouth, inspecting it. From the roughness of the skin, and the fact that it was the second time she’d done it since we sat down, it was clearly a nervous habit for her. I slowly dragged my fingers across her palm, then laid her hand on the table.

Her breathing hitched. “I’m older than you are.”

“Three years,” I scoffed. “It’s nothing.”

“I’m serious. I don’t do relationships.”

“Nor do I.” I bent forward, lowering my voice. “May I be blunt with you?”

I’d like to see what happens when you’re naked and aroused.” I tilted my head, studying her. “Like now—are you aware in the past few minutes, your breathing picked up and your eyes darkened? You have the loveliest color across your cheeks. Even the tips of your ears are pink. I wonder how far down I could make you flush that way.”

Her color deepened, but she didn’t flinch. She shifted closer, our knees pressed together under the table. Her normally husky voice was even lower, turning me on. “You want honest?”

I nodded.

“I think you’re one of the sexiest men I’ve ever met, Maddox. I see how your toned body moves when you walk, and I imagine you moving in me. You use your hands a lot when you talk, and I want to feel them on my skin. Your muscles flex under your expensive suits, and I want to feel them tighten under my touch.” She ran her finger over her lips. “I want to taste you and watch you fall apart.”

I can’t ever seem to get enough of Hudson and Alayna Pierce! Throughout this book, we see how much Hudson loves Alayna and their children and how he would do just about anything to ensure their continued happiness and safety.

You get to see inside their marriage and family life. Hudson is just perfect, his fierceness and tenacity were admirable and I loved that he had moments of vulnerability. He always stands by Alayna’s side while she faces her anxieties. He is perceptive and understanding. Hudson and Alayna truly are each other’s rock and despite the challenges, they have the ability to come out stronger than ever.

This book focuses on Alayna’s insecurities and anxiety. As it happens, the threats to her safety are very real and there are reasons for Hudson to be concerned and scared. The story had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next.

Laurelin Paige demonstrates time and time again her ability to weave together gripping storylines with powerful emotional complexity. This story took me through a whole gamut of emotions and the plot, full of expected and unexpected twists, kept me turning the pages. Alayna and Hudson are special and unique characters, and their story really stole my heart.

“May I get you something to drink while you wait for the rest of your party?” the waiter asked.

I would normally wait to see what the client did and follow his lead on alcohol. But tonight was not the norm.

I rubbed at my stiff neck. “I’ll take a vodka cranberry, please.”

I hoped it would help calm my nerves and release some of the tension in my jaw before I gave myself a full-blown headache. Taking out my phone, I started to scroll through emails to distract myself while waiting for my drink and dinner companion.

My head whipped up at the sound of Gray’s voice behind me. “Sorry I’m late.”

My heart unexpectedly fluttered, and I fought against the feeling of excitement. “Are you really? Because I get the sense you don’t have any manners after the way you interrupted me a million times today.”

He completely ignored my attitude as he took the seat across from me. “Traffic is a bitch getting downtown at this time. Next time we’ll have dinner at my place.”

“There won’t be a next time.”

Gray’s mouth curved into a smug smile as he snagged my gaze. “Sure there will. There’ll be plenty of next times. And eventually you’ll stop pretending you don’t enjoy my company.”

I hated that my body reacted to him. Right from the very start, we’d had a crazy chemistry between us that was difficult to dull.

I sighed. “What are you doing, Gray? Why did you come to my firm?”

He lifted the cloth napkin in front of him and laid it across his lap. “Isn’t that obvious? I need new legal representation.”

“At my firm? And you’d prefer that representation come from an associate instead of my boss’s boss—the head of our securities division? Or even from Pittman, who would gladly hold your hand and provide you whatever legal advice you need from his fifty-plus years of experience?”

“Loyalty is important to me. I want someone I can trust with my business.”

“And you’ve decided that’s me? An associate with five years experience who just got off probation with the Bar Association for violating attorney-client privilege?”

The waiter arrived with my drink. “Here you go, ma’am.” He turned to Gray. “May I get you something to drink? Or would you like to wait until the last of your party joins you this evening?”

“It’s just the two of us. I’ll have a Macallan, neat, please.”

“Coming right up.” The waiter walked around to the other side of the table and started to remove the third place setting.

I put my hand out, stopping him. “We actually do have another party coming, so you can leave that.”

“Very well.” He nodded.

Gray waited until the waiter was out of earshot. “I didn’t invite anyone else to dinner.”

I sipped my drink and offered a saccharine-sweet fake smile. “I did. Figured an important client like you should have more than one attorney to answer his questions.”

Just as I set down my glass, I saw the other man I was waiting for enter the restaurant. He scanned the room, looking for me, so I held up my hand and waved.

“Perfect timing. There’s Oliver now.”

Gray glanced at the man heading toward us and back to me. Instead of being pissed off, the jerk was amused. “That’s cute. You invited a chaperone because you don’t trust yourself with me.”
