My Review

This was a beautiful, heartbreaking story, with some outstanding writing.  It is the kind of story that will leave you raw. There’s so much depth, so many emotions, and so many layers of meaning in the story. This is a life story. There is humor, anger, tragedy, growth, sadness, loss, healing and love. Yet, while I did enjoy this book, it just didn’t hit the high notes that Kate Stewart’s previous books did. The reason is the constant use of flashbacks that kept confusing me.

That being said, Mia and Lucas are unforgettable characters, I was consumed by their story and I was rooting for them from the very beginning. Their story is deeply emotional, engrossing, it’s not the story of an easy love. It’s not your typical Hollywood heartthrob story either. Of course, I knew that acting was not a walk in the park. But this goes beyond what I had envisioned.

Lucas Walker is a chameleon and a risk-taker. Being someone else is his personal way to evade his demons. He rose to stardom thanks to his determination, focus and hard work.  His marriage with Mia has stood the test of time. Their open communication has been their saving grace, and they have been the perfect team. But even though he has got everything he could possibly want, he seems to have lost touch with himself since a tragedy struck him.  Mia doesn’t recognize him anymore. Their couple faces a crisis, but what they have is something that can’t easily be discounted, it’s a matter of rebuilding trust and fixing their relationship.

I truly enjoyed reading about the journey Mia and Lucas had to go through to get to their renewed happy ending. I recommend this book.

Cruel Fortune is the second installment in the Cruel Trilogy. Once again, the story and plot lines had me hooked instantly. I love how this story deals with psychological issues and the way people affect one another, through love, pain or betrayal. This story is a slice of life that isn’t afraid to go dark, with complex characters that are not idealized.

One year later, Natalie is back in New York. She has released a bestseller under a pen name. Penn has let her walk out of his life after she found out about the bet, thinking he didn’t care for her. He hates being the one who brought her pain and he is desperate to make amends.

Lewis Warren is Natalie’s book publisher and he has been able to twist her thoughts, to bring down the barriers she had put up for her security. Lewis is a flirt and one of the five Upper East Siders who hurt her deeply. She knows she should stay away. And yet, he has helped her find her way back to writing. Lewis is a mysterious character and his confusing actions had me on my toes. I loved how his personality and motives were slowly revealed throughout the story. Natalie is a character I found very easy to relate to, but nevertheless I felt that she was a bit passive and naïve. Throughout the story, she struggles with who she can and can’t trust.

I loved the way the anticipation and suspense was building in this installment. It is very easy to become completely engrossed in this story, and that is exactly what I enjoy about a good book! It sucks you in deeper with every word. I will be anxiously waiting for the final installment in this compelling series!

Deep and very well written, this was such a sensitive and beautiful story of enduring love and second chance with deeply layered and nuanced character development. The storyline is so fresh and poignant that I couldn’t stop reading. It illustrates the reality of both sides of a soulmate relationship and the consequences both sides suffer when only one makes a choice. This story is very much like the jigsaw of life, a tapestry of the uneven and broken pieces each character experiences that somehow come together to complete the canvas.

Maxon Chambers’s life is filled with great friends, and yet he is lonely. Izzy was his future, but his fear railroaded their past. She was his best friend, his escape in a very bleak existence and his first and only love. But they were from opposite sides of the tracks and he had always felt an outsider in her world. He made a difficult choice to protect her. Maxon and Izzy are well developed characters and I liked them. Their chemistry is palpable, my heart was lost in their romance from the beginning. Izzy is back in town with her two adorable sons and Maxon wants to do right by them. The story highlights the trials her family has faced, and the courage of their son. Watching him work to earn Izzy’s kids trust melted my heart.

The narrative flicked between current and past history and it worked well. The drip feed of background information kept the tension and intensity of the story at a high level. From the very start, this was a captivating read with strong, beautiful characters.

This book is definitely a new favorite of mine and I highly recommend it. It concludes the Confessions of the Heart Series and it’s always bittersweet when you come to the end of a series you’ve loved.

My Review

Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was really keen to read this one as I was thoroughly intrigued with how the author would handle combining the tropes from The Beauty Series, The Sin Trilogy, Dear Agony, and Indulge. I’m going to be completely honest and say overall I enjoyed this book though it took me a while to really engage with the story and the characters. There were elements I liked but there were also parts that didn’t work for me. The story had potential but the characters’ connection never really felt based on believable chemistry, and neither character felt fully fleshed out.

Caitriona Louden, “Lou”, has learned at a very young age how to fend for herself. Her family has cut her off and she needs money to pay for her college tuition. Maxwell Hutcheson is a wealthy widower who wants the fake girlfriend experience. He is nursing a battered heart and there will be no pretense between him and Lou. Their relationship is based on honesty, known expectations and a binding contract. And yet, Max wants more than a paid companion, he wants to pursue an emotional and physical connection with Lou. And that’s where emotions are brought into the mix. Max challenges Lou, but she is not willing to open her heart to a man who might break it.

I love this author and really wanted to love this one too, but, so far, I’ve struggled with the lack of characters’ depth. I never got the sense of a deep emotional connection between them. I hope there will be more focus on the development of Max and Caitriona’s romance in the second part of their story.

My Review

This book was an addicting read, full of angst and intrigue. The author made me feel every range of emotions while reading her story. The cause was Cleo and Zach, these are real, troubled and flawed characters. I loved how they completed each other but their romance wasn’t easy. Even with all the obstacles they had to go through and mistakes they had to fix, they didn’t give up. These two were really an inspiration for me. Their story was deep, meaningful. It’s about accepting and loving yourself. And by doing that, you love and accept everyone else, with no prejudice.

Zach is insecure, lost. He is a rich, bored guy that seems to have no depth. He rejects people before they can reject him. To say that Zach and Cleo have a mutual dislike for each other from the very beginning is putting it lightly. They met in middle school, and Cleo bore the brunt of Zach’s hate.  He bullied her, amusing himself by tormenting and humiliating her. I understood why he was so angry, and I also understood why he did the things he did. But I could not forgive his actions. He repents in the sweetest way, though and his development through the book was awesome. Cleo is a strong character, lively and spunky. She pretty much knows what she wants and goes for it.

Zach and Cleo’s journey of love, trust, understanding, redemption and forgiveness is long and arduous, but definitely worth reading. I’m glad I read this book and became acquainted with this author. I really look forward to more of her stories.
