Carried Away by P. Dangelico #newrelease #bookreview

Carried Away, a brand new standalone contemporary romance by P. Dangelico, is coming June 16, 2020!

Carrie Anderson––truth seeker, storyteller, journalist-at-large––is bad at social media and great at getting herself into trouble.

When she’s fired from her dream job for an ill-advised tweet, she has no other choice but to return to the town where she grew up with her head hung low.

It’s temporary after all. She can work at her family’s bed and breakfast, fix her finances, and get back to her life and home in Los Angeles.

There’s only one not-so-little problem…the grouchy ex-NHL star making her rethink what home means.

Jake Turner––great at hockey, bad at people––is not a happy man.

Haunted by his past, all he wants is to disappear into obscurity, to get away from the scrutiny of the press he’s been under since going pro at nineteen. But when the press finds him, disappearing is no longer an option.

Worse yet, the same journalist he’s trying to avoid is making him reconsider whether being forgotten is what he really wants.

My Review

Rating : 4 Stars

Paola Dangelico never fails to entertain me. I’ve been struggling with reads in recent weeks. I really needed one of her books! The kind that is low on drama and high on the humour. The dialogue between the characters is nothing short of amazing, it is fast paced and entertaining.

The characters of Carrie and Jake were layered. They both had issues that they carried into their relationship. These issues were handled with sensitivity. I loved the dynamic between these two characters, nothing was forced or rushed. Their relationship is definitely rocky from the start, but it was wonderful to see that change slowly.

I loved Carrie almost immediately. She has had a rough time and is trying to find herself.  She is sassy and vulnerable and I loved her quirky, goofy sense of humour.  She has a colorful personality, but she is often misunderstood. Jake is somewhat rough around the edges, but also caring and gentle. His hockey career has been on a hiatus since the accidental death of his long-time friend, and he is trying to figure out how to move on. His grumpiness hid a layer of vulnerability and loneliness.

I loved seeing their relationship blooming and growing, as they both come to terms with their feelings and emotions. This story is a believable romance between two memorable characters. Their chemistry felt genuine and while the plot was predictable, the characters made it enjoyable.

Thanks for stopping by and happy reading!

My honest review is based on an advanced reader copy of this book.

Excerpt:

Without a backward glance, I walk inside, unsure if he’ll follow, but a minute later he shuts the door behind him. His head hung low, his hands shoved in the pockets of his jeans, every 6’ 3” inch of him looking as remorseful as he should.

“I didn’t mean to embarrass you,” he mutters to the carpet. “I’m sorry.” His gaze lifts to meet mine and the heat I find there is unmistakable. “I wanted you to myself tonight and I didn’t handle it well.”

Somebody beat on my chest. I think I just flatlined. Remorseful Jake is my favorite Jake so far, so sexy I want to peel that black t-shirt off his body with my teeth. Or maybe I’ll let him take mine off first.

About P. Dangelico:

P. Dangelico loves romance in all forms, cuddly creatures (four legged and two), really bloody sexy pulp, the NY Jets (although she’s reconsidering after this season), and to while away the day at the barn (apparently she does her best thinking shoveling horse crap). What she’s not enamored with is referring to herself in the third person and social media so don’t expect her to get on Twitter anytime soon. Oh, and although she was born in Italy, she’s been Jersey Strong since she turned six.

Come Down ecover

Did you ever hear the joke about the guy whose wife cheated on him with his best friend? So he quit his job, moved into his parents’ basement, and gained fifty pounds?

No? Because that wasn’t a joke. It was my life.

Four years later, I’m back with a dream job, a killer apartment, and a set of abs that are better than ever.

So, when Maggie Light, a stunning, snarky blonde moves in next door, and we spend the hottest weekend of our lives together, I think this could be the greatest comeback story ever.

That is until I realize Maggie has moved to town to do one thing—steal my job.

Maybe this isn’t a comeback story after all. Maybe this is war—one I intend to win.

What I never anticipated was that maybe I’d rather win her.

Perhaps, if I’m lucky, the universe has finally run out of jokes and I can somehow win both.

My Review

Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

This was a lighthearted, fun, fast read. The demure hero was a very enjoyable main character and the perfect fit for the funny, determined heroine. The chemistry between Shane and Maggie jumps off of the page and the reader can feel its intensity through the interactions that they have with each other. The way they taunted each other yet also cared about each other was nice. Although they were both smart and driven, they both also had underlying vulnerabilities and fears that influenced their lives.

Shane is funny and awkward at times, but he has a deep side, one that has been deeply hurt by his divorce. He is struggling to figure out what he wants out of life and what will make him happy. He is a creature of habit. There was something about Shane and his calm and collected demeanor that always pulled me to him.

Maggie’s bright, sunny personality is what Shane needs to bring some sunshine into his life. Maggie has taken a leap of faith, thrown caution to the wind to forge her own new path. She has left her family behind and moved to Francisco. She wants to see herself as a bit of an adventurer and to live the life her mother never got.

My one complaint would be that the idea that Maggie and Shane were competing for the position of creative director fell a little flat for me. I didn’t really believe in their hating game. Of course, their situation was uncomfortable. But they were always honest and thoughtful with one another.

So, overall, I enjoyed this story. I would recommend it to people who like cute, fluffy office romances.

Many thanks to the authors and Social Butterfly PR for the advanced reader copy of this book.

Excerpt

Oh, for fuck’s sake. Am I a man or not?

Here goes fucking nothing.

Take a risk, my ass. I’d fucking show Casey and Blake a damn risk.

I marched down to where she was sitting. “Hi, I’m Shane.”

She looked shocked, maybe a little startled by my approach—and rightly so. I’d stalked over like the fucking Terminator, all amped up from my private pep talk.

“The bartender, Chris, said you’re new in town, and it’s your first time here.”

Her sparkling blue eyes stood out against her makeup, and now—standing close to her—I could smell her perfume. A subtle and warm scent that made me want to lean in.

What the fuck had I been thinking?

To put it mildly, she was out of my league, but hey… Risks, right?

“If you’re dining alone, would you mind if I offer a suggestion from the menu?”

“I was only looking it over out of curiosity. I really just came in for a drink or two.” She folded it and placed it on the wooden top in front of her.

Goddamn, that cleavage.

“Oh. Yeah. Okay. Well, then…uh…let me get one for you.” I might have strutted over like the Terminator, but I was fumbling over my words like Barney Fife and beginning to sweat like a Crossfitter.

Her brows bunched. “Um, you really don’t have to do that.”

“Please. After the day I’ve had, I’ll actually have one with you.” I swiped at the back of my neck. “The drinks are good here. Very cold. Wet.” Jesus fucking Christ, Shane. Wet!? “Um. Alcoholic, if that’s what you’re into.” I waved Chris—and his bigger-than-life shit-eating grin—down to us.

“Find something you’d like?” he asked her.

“I’ll just have a Titos and cranberry,” she answered. “I hear they’re very cold and wet here.”

Chris looked at me disappointedly, probably guessing at how badly I’d botched this introduction. He wasn’t wrong, but she hadn’t told me to fuck off yet.

Yet.

“And I’ll take a Honeybee Brown,” I added.

He spun on his heel, shocked. “Really?”

I shrugged and shot daggers at him. “Really. A pint, please.”

“A cold, wet one too, eh? Okay, man. Coming right up.” He made our drinks and then about a dozen more for the servers who were keeping him busy.

“Thanks for the drink,” she said, clinking our glasses together, her eyes never quite meeting mine.

“Yeah. Sure. No problem.” I followed her lead and took a sip.

“So, do you come here a lot, Shane?”

My name on her lips had me clearing my throat.

“Yes,” replied our asshole bartender before I could answer.

“I live close,” I explained, and she nodded in understanding. “So, where did you come to the Bay from?” I took another sip, realizing that counting the beer I’d had with Casey earlier and this one, I was nearing my only-a-few-drinks daily limit. So I’d be savoring the pint as long as she didn’t seem too put off by my dusty-ass small talk. Otherwise, I could chug it down and then be on my merry way, leaving her to enjoy her night without a divorced, practically fired dude bugging her.

“Atlanta,” she replied and swirled a piece of ice with the drink stirrer in her glass. Still no eye contact.

Small talk. I fumbled for more small talk.

“You have family here?”

“No, I’ve always wanted to get out of Georgia. So, when I landed a job out here, it seemed like a sign.”

Finally, her blue eyes met mine and… Fuck, if I could have just remembered to blink, I’d have been doing well. I feared if I broke the gaze for just a second, I’d never see that color again, because surely it was a mirage of some sort. Like a crystal-blue pool in a desert. The kind of trick eyes could only play on a man who hadn’t been laid in nearly half a decade.

She finished with, “I start on Monday. I guess fate is as good a time as any to take a risk.”

My Review

Rating :⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this story of two people who found one another and form a bond that made them feel safe, with someone who really cared about them. Violet is from the rich side of town. She has a nice house and money but lacks security and love.  Miller lives with his mother, in difficult conditions. Violet and Miller are compelling characters, and I loved the way the author advanced their romance. Both are confused by the storm of emotions they feel for each other. I worried for them a few times but nothing can come between true love.

Emma Scott’s writing draws you into her characters and their lives and holds you there from beginning to end. This is the kind of story that you simply feel the characters becoming a part of each other lives and  falling in love. It is written with emotional depth and the pace of their story is just right. It’s hard to say how charming I found Violet and Miller.

Violet is a great character. She is a no-nonsense type of girl, smart and selfless, truly a gem. She wants to be a doctor. In the meantime, she is keen to experience the human side of her future profession. Miller is deep, intense and unlike the other boys she knows. She likes that he is a bit of a mystery and enjoys getting to know him. He is the person she can’t live without and she would do anything to keep him safe. Miller has built strength out of helplessness and fear. He never complains and channels himself through his affection for Violet that translates in his music.

Engaging characters, a beautiful story that kept me turning the pages and flawless writing, this book has it all. I found it hard to put down, finding myself rushing through daily living requirements to continue reading! Highly recommended!

My Review

Rating : 4.5 Stars

Kennedy Ryan knows how to write an engrossing story. This second chance at love romance hits all the right notes and was deeply satisfying on an emotional level. Both leading characters were superb and well-defined. The flashback scenes play an important role in the development of their characters.

Told in dual POV this is a story that I could read over and over again. One of my favorite kinds of reads are second chance romances.

Kimba Allen and Ezra Stern are two characters that are meant to be together. They were best friends and they had a pact that nothing would come between them. And yet they grew apart and lost contact with each other. Timing wasn’t always on their sides.

From the beginning, it’s difficult not to like Kimba, the protagonist of this novel. She is a tough cookie and a skilled strategist. She enjoys being in the trenches, politics is a tough game. She is shrewd and confident. She is a beautiful, strong, generous, kind, and thoughtful heroine.

I have to say that Ezra totally stole this book for me, even when they were younger his affection for Kimba radiated off the pages and the more intense, broody adult Ezra brought those emotions and feelings to a whole new level. The scenes between these two both in the past and present grabbed at my heart. Their emotional journey is complex and challenging but captivating.  They are friends and so much more. With shared childhood memories, they are able to tease and bicker like the friends they are, but there is also amazing chemistry. I also loved how open they could be with one another.

Thanks for stopping by and happy reading!

My honest review is based on an advanced reader copy of this book.

QUEEN MOVE CHAIR AN TEASER

Excerpt:

“You’re fucking brilliant.”

“Huh?” Ezra asks absentmindedly, paying more attention to the flame under his pan than to my compliment. “What’d you say?”

“I said you’re brilliant.” I hold up the iPad I’m using to read his manuscript. “Your book, the YLA story, is incredible, Ez.”

“Oh. Thanks.” He flashes me a smile and then goes back to his French toast. “The key to getting this right is the milk-to-bread ratio.”

I hop off the counter and walk over to stand beside him at the stove. “Would you forget about your French toast for a minute and listen to me?”

“But it’s stuffed French toast.” He takes the pan off the burner and pulls me into his arms. “And I could listen to you all day. What were you saying? Something about me being a handsome, sexy genius?”

“Um…those weren’t my exact words.” I laugh up at him.

“I could have sworn that’s what you said, and I’m never wrong.” He slides his hands over my ass in a pair of his boxer shorts. “Some even say I’m fucking brilliant.”

“They probably just like your big dick,” I whisper and blink up at him as innocently as I can manage.

“I get that a lot.” He drops a kiss on my head and turns back to his French toast. I lean down to rest an elbow on the counter and watch him work.

“A lot?” I ask teasingly. “Have there been a lot?”

He pauses mid-toast-flip and slants me a glance. “Are you asking how many people I’ve had sex with?”

“I mean, it’s none of my business. If you don’t want to—”

“Eight.”

Eight?

Lord above, only eight?!

“Oh.” I straighten and rest my hip against the counter. “What a, um, single-digit number that is.”

“What about you?”

What about me? I’m tabulating years of hook-ups, one-night stands, fuck bois and carrying the one.

“If you don’t want to,” he says, cracking an egg into a bowl, “it’s fine. I don’t care how many people—”

“I don’t know.”

He glances up from whisking eggs, a small frown puckering his dark brows. “You don’t know what?”

“My number. I don’t know how many people I’ve been with.”

He resumes whisking, his frown clearing. “Oh.”

The whisking eggs and whirring refrigerator are the only sounds in the kitchen. I’ve never been embarrassed by my choices. I enjoy sex. I’ve had it with a lot of people. People I really liked…or tolerated…but didn’t want to commit to. I’ve always been safe and never mean about it. I was upfront, and when someone wanted more, I let them know “more” wasn’t an option.

“I just never…” I cross my arms over my stomach, fold one bare foot over the other. “I haven’t been interested in committed relationships. There hasn’t been anyone I wanted that with.”

“Tru.” He stops whisking and gives me the full impact of his undivided attention. His eyes are placid blue. No shadows or undercurrents. “I don’t care.” Ezra pushes the bowl aside and faces me. “But there is something I feel like we should be clear on regarding how you’ve handled sex in the past.”

Here we go.

“You’ve never wanted to commit before,” he says.

“Right. I’ve never wanted any strings attached.”

“I know I said we could be just sex, no emotional attachments.” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “But I feel like I have to be honest with you. Having you back in my life has been…it’s been exactly what I need, and what I felt last night… I’ve never felt that way before.”

I’m not even sure my heart is beating, but it also feels like there’s a tumult in my chest. “What are you saying, Ez?”

His mouth flattens into a hard line and his jaw hardens to stone. “I want strings.”

“Y-you do?”

“I want strings.” He links our fingers, strokes his thumb across my palm. “Ropes, if necessary. I want anything that keeps you with me and me with you and tells everyone else don’t even think about it.”

I’m stunned and incredibly turned on, but that doesn’t take much where Ezra’s concerned.

“You…you do?” I ask faintly…again.

“I wouldn’t do well sharing you.”
