Thick wavy auburn hair fell in disarray over his forehead. It was lush, shiny, perfect. Were guys born with hair like that? Or was his somehow chemically engineered? His full lips pressed together in a secret smile as the equally handsome man next to him said something, then erupted in laughter.

The first man stiffened, then shook his head. His broad shoulders seemed to grow tight as a drum. A slight tic in his jaw was the only clue that he was irritated or maybe outright angry.

And then his shoulders slumped as he was handed another drink and then another.

Nervous. He must be nervous. But what could a man like that possibly have to be nervous about?

He easily towered over most of the men in attendance. Suddenly his posture changed, then he smiled.

Jane felt her mouth drop open in shock.

Dazzling.

He was…like a duke or a lord or a prince from a storybook. Clearly, she read too many romance novels, but his entire presence demanded attention; screamed authority, importance, and sex. Lots and lots of sex.

Yes, his virility was a tangible thing, as if she could reach out and grasp it with her fingertips.

“What are you doing?” Esmeralda yelled in her right ear, interrupting her blatant sexual fantasy about a complete stranger. Great. That’s what her life had come to. And sadly? It was the most fun she’d had all night.

Jane turned to Esmeralda, prayed for patience, and answered. “Sorry, I was just thinking.”

“You’re so boring.” Esmeralda rolled her eyes. “No wonder you got dumped.”

Another fun fact? Esmeralda was mean when she was drunk.

The reminder of the breakup burned like acid.

It had been a year ago, not that it mattered. It still hurt that the last guy she’d dated had told her that although she was cute, she wasn’t really doing it for him anymore.

Right. Doing it.

Maybe that was because she hadn’t done anything for him or with him, and he found that lacking. But they’d only dated for a few weeks. Did normal girls do that? Put out after a few weeks? Apparently.

She wasn’t normal.

But if that was normal, maybe she was better off being strange.

“Jane, are you even listening to me?” Esmeralda whined. “Essence needs you to dance next to her for a bit. I’m tired and tipsy. I want to sit. Plus your dress blends in enough that it won’t take attention away from her.”

No way. What? What had she just said?

Jane wrapped her arms around her middle. “I’m sorry, what?”

Without warning, Esmeralda grabbed Jane’s hand and jerked her toward the dance floor, causing Jane to lose her footing and crash directly into Esmeralda’s back. Then, like a domino, she slammed back into Essence.

Jane opened her mouth to shout out an apology, but Esmeralda was already too drunk to listen to reason. With determination in her eyes, she reached for the pearls at Jane’s neck but grabbed the fabric of the dress instead.

Her poorly sewn dress ripped instantly, causing the fabric to slink past her strapless bra. A diagonal slit split up her thigh almost all the way to her hip. In an effort to cover herself, she took a step and tripped, thanks to her clunky shoes.

And then she fell to the floor.

Hard.

Her sisters watched in horror—but neither of them offered a hand. They were probably kicking themselves for forcing her to come. Esmeralda leaned over but missed Jane’s shoulder by a mile, grabbing her hair and giving it a tug, which only made Jane wince harder.

Both sisters were completely tanked.

And she was less than two minutes away from being trampled by the other sweaty bodies around her.

She glanced up.

And into the eyes of the man she’d just been lusting after.

Oh God, the humiliation was complete.

That one glance told her he’d seen it all. She swallowed back the thickness building in her throat. Of course the only time he’d notice her would be when she’d ripped her dress and nearly took out a few guests on her way down to the dance floor.

The crowd gathered around her.

And the sexy man disappeared—probably off in search of a girl with perfect hair, perfect teeth, perfect clothes.

She really should have stayed home.

Tears filled her eyes as a heel pressed into her right hand. With a jerk she tugged her hand free, struggling to get up to stand on her wobbly feet, when suddenly she was pulled to a standing position and then swept up in strong arms.

Jane’s eyes were still so blurry from unshed tears she couldn’t make out the man’s face as he carried her out of the crowd.

He smelled like heaven.

She fought the insane urge to press her face against his chest and just…close her eyes.

Because he felt safe.

Pathetic, when a stranger’s arms provided more safety than her own family. And yet he felt…right.

In a world where things for the past ten years had felt so wrong.

He felt right.

Maybe she’d had too much champagne.

Max King was such a wonderful surprise! Louise Bay has created a nuanced, complex character and, to be honest, I couldn’t help falling head over heels for him! He is a hugely successful businessman, driven, ambitious and respected by everyone on Wall Street. In his professional role of CEO of a consulting company, he can be demanding, blunt and ruthless, though. In his private life, he is his true self and the very involved single father of a teenage daughter, Amanda. So basically, Max has a dual life, in two different places, and has managed to succeed both his professional and his father’s life. His relationship with Amanda was true-to-life, with some humoristic and heartfelt moments, as he tries to navigate through his daughter’s adolescent changes.

When she was hired by Max’s company as junior researcher, Harper Jayne thought she had landed her dream job. She is smart, ambitious and wants to work for Max. In a way, he is her perfect role model. But, with her, Max is more tyrant than mentor, he is blunt, cold or acts as if she didn’t exist. In reality, Max is fighting his attraction to Harper and his overwhelming desire to get to know her. There was a lot of sexual tension between them. Although Max is used to always getting what he wants, Harper is a whole new challenge. He never mixes the personal and professional aspects of his life, but he can’t resist her. They agree on a trip to Vegas… in his NYC penthouse, because what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, … at least until their virtual trip becomes recurrent.

There were some twists and difficulties caused by Harper’s emotional baggage related to her bad relationship with her father and Max’s lack of relationship experience. But with the help of Amanda and Max’s interfering sisters, the happy ending was a sure thing!

This story had the perfect balance of emotions, humor and sizzling hot chemistry, with well-developed, engaging characters, witty dialogue and a well-paced plot. This book is the first standalone in Louise Bay’s new Manhattan Royalty series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I can’t wait for more!

Ravenous is the fifth installment in the Quantum series and it is definitely my favorite so far! It follows the friends-to-lovers relationship between Ellie Godfrey, sister of superstar actor Flynn Godfrey featured in the original Quantum trilogy, and Jasper Autry. Ellie and Jasper are amazing characters, their story was heart melting and pulled me in from the first page. I adored everything about this sexy, intense and tender erotic romance, with witty dialogues and heartfelt moments. The writing was flawless and this book was perfect of sweetness and sexiness.

Ellie Godfrey might be Hollywood royalty, she has never even come close to being in love. In her mid-thirties, she has the feeling her biological clock is ticking and has decided to resort to a sperm bank to find a biological father for her future child. Jasper Autry has been her friend for years and there is affection and trust between them. Jasper is her brother’s business partner and an Award-winning cinematographer, known for a long series of brief romantic relationships.

As the story unfolded, it was obvious that Jasper had always been into Ellie but was convinced that he was not the right man for her. However, offering “his contribution” to her baby project was a no-brainer and a perfect opportunity to finally have more with her! Although Ellie never expected his offer, she easily agrees to his terms. She is attracted to him and his sexy British accent! I loved that everything was easy between them, nothing was forced. Jasper has many secrets, he is relieved he can be himself with Ellie and discuss his kinky sexual preferences and his need for dominance. Ellie is open minded, she totally trusts Jasper and accepts to explore new frontiers with him.

Jasper is the whole package, he is sexy, lighthearted and kind, but he hides his wounds behind his smile. He knows the life he has made for himself in L.A. is on a timer. What Jasper and Ellie shared felt real. They are both more and more invested in their relationship, but are conflicted by their intense feelings and the temporary status of their arrangement. Jasper doesn’t want to burden Ellie and his not yet conceived child with his family legacy and obligations. But he didn’t count on Ellie’s decision to fight for him and convince him he can have it all.

This story was simply beautiful and tugged at my heartstrings, big time! I loved the extended family spirit with all the characters from the previous (and future, I hope) Quantum books. It can be read as a standalone and is told in Ellie and Jasper’s point of view. Definitely a favorite book by a talented author!

Review : The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore

This captivating historical fiction relates the battle between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse to build the electrical system that would light the United States. The outcome of this war between two geniuses would reverberate for generations. This story of inventors and major industry players is a unique, thrilling and fast paced read, set in Gilded Age, a period that fascinates me. Frankly, this book was unputdownable and a great starting point for additional research on the subject!

The story is told from the point of view of Paul Cravath, an ambitious, smart but inexperienced law prodigy, with only one client to his name. He is only 27 years old when he is hired to be the lead litigator representing George Westinghouse in the largest patent suit in U.S. history, related to the incandescent light bulb. This patent was the most valuable ever granted at the time and its holder, Thomas Edison, had accused George Westinghouse of infringing on it.

Paul is caught between two geniuses in the middle of the “war of the currents”. He soon realizes that the battle between Edison’s direct current and Westinghouse’s alternating current is not really about demonstrated product superiority but rather about perceived superiority by the general public.

Paul is in way over his head but knows that understanding the personality of the stakeholders is of the utmost importance to win the war. What makes these scientists tick? Edison and Westinghouse had a totally different vision of the progress. Edison wanted to be the most famous inventor in the world, Westinghouse was a craftsman and wanted to make the best products with the most useful technology.

Paul wants to create the conditions for a level playing field, with fair competition between all players. But the conflict will ultimately result in the creation of a major corporation, General Electric. This process of economic concentration is typical of the period.

Graham Moore has penned a brilliant and clever story focusing on precursors,  one of them being Paul Cravath himself, as the inventor of the modern law firm. With this book, the author has demonstrated that technological evolution can be the subject of a page-turner.

Review : Sugar Rush (Sugar Bowl #2) by Sawyer Bennett

I was super excited to start reading this book. “Sugar Daddy” was a riveting and thrilling story, but OMG that cliffhanger was painful! I couldn’t wait to get my hands on its sequel! This book focusses on Sela’s revenge, devised and implemented by Beck, and ends on a cliffhanger.

“Sugar Rush” picks up where “Sugar Daddy” left off. Beck slowly understands that Sela didn’t lie about JT. His friend definitely has the potential to harm a woman. He is ashamed of the way he discounted her claim of rape and wants to apologize to her. As it happens, the ordeal they went through serves as a confirmation of their deep feelings for each other.

Beck will do everything in his power to help Sela, he is determined to make things right for her. She admits her obsession to kill JT. But although she still needs to seek justice for herself, she will do nothing if it endangers her relationship with Beck. I loved that she could count on Beck’s loyalty. His friendship with JT is over and he intends to take him down. His dilemma is how to do it, taking into account the consequences of his choices. He devises a plan to force JT to accept a buyout from The Sugar Bowl, which would be a legally acceptable way to make JT pay for his actions. But even the best-laid plans can go wrong, especially if the malice of the adversary has been underestimated.

Once again, this book was unputdownable, addictive and perfectly written. It is now obvious that Beck and Sela are soulmates. Their relationship is based on trust and loyalty, their interactions were sexy as hell and so sweet! The reader also gets to know more about Beck’s family, and let’s just say that there were some shocking revelations I didn’t expect. Needless to mention that I’m dying to read the final book in the trilogy!

Review : To Kiss a Thief (The Runaway Desires #1) by Susanna Craig

I loved this beautiful story of homecoming and redemption, set in Georgian England. The author’s writing is elegant and emotion inducing, the main characters are engaging and likeable. This book is a great debut by an author I will definitely follow in the future.

Newly married Sarah Pevensey is accused of infidelity and theft by her husband’s family. Unfortunately, appearances are deceptive, she was caught in a compromising position with another man and a family heirloom in her possession disappeared.
Her marriage to St. John Sutliffe, Viscount Fairfax, was a mere business agreement arranged by her father. She knows she is a fool to have fallen in love with a husband who doesn’t reciprocate her feelings and married her for her dowry. To avoid prison and the scandal, she has no other choice than to run away to the country and disappear from her husband’s life.

Three years later, St. John is back from the West Indies, where he left to escape the shame and the sorrow caused by his cheating wife. He was led to believe that Sarah was dead. When he discovers she is still alive, he tracks her down to a small fishing village on the coast, where she lives with her daughter. Their reunion is anything but cordial. He still sees her as a false-hearted liar, she wants the wrong to be righted. St. John is conflicted though, he feels guilty about abandoning her and has doubts about her actual guilt. He has to admit that after a token courtship and only two weeks of marriage, they didn’t know each other and he might have misjudged his wife. He was never indifferent to her but is convinced that love is a risk not worth taking.

St. John is a great character, he is open, genuine and gentle, but still deeply hurt by his wife’s apparent betrayal. Sarah is kind-hearted and courageous, she has found her place in the village and has friends who trust her, unlike her husband. However, she can’t resist the attraction she feels for him as he insinuates himself in her life. Sarah and St. John have much in common, and are forever united by an adorable little girl. Their bond can’t be denied. Against all odds, St. John finds himself wooing his wife, showing her sincere affection. But he needs to convince her that she can trust him with her heart.

What a treat to read this charming story! I definitely can’t wait for the next installment in the author’s “Runaway Desires” series. If you enjoy a smart historical romance with all the feels, this book is a great pick!
